That is the air purge from oil filter housing. If you take the roll pin out the metal piece inside looks like a tear drop. Air won't push its weight upward but oil will.
The oil pressure relief valve that controls the maximum oil pressure is part of the oi pump and you remove oil pump and then remove the screws holding the two parts of the oil pump together. There is a spring, a bullet shaped valve and a steel seat for the valve. If oil pressure gets high enough, 70-75 psi, then the pressure pushes valve off seat and the discharged oil goes into the cavity where oil pickup oil enters.

I think I gotcha.
Mine seems to operate as it should then, air freely can be blown from the top through to the filter housing, and a small amount of air PSI can be blown from the filter housing back up through the relief valve but it closes at a certain amount of air PSI. Let air off and it springs back down.

So the pan bolts get torqued to 17 NM and the big trans bolts get torqued to 48 NM, correct?

I'll hold off on relaxing until after I've pulled the motor & replaced the flywheel/flexplate (see HERE , oh lucky me).

But for now, the engine runs good, no leaks put maybe 60 miles on this evening. Oil PSI is good again, will pull this temporary "flush" oil & SeaFoam out shortly & replace with real oil.

I am so so grateful to you guys for all your help and accumulated knowledge.

I am eager to add to the wealth of knowledge here.

Hey, Pete, if you want to see some really bad bearings, just take a look here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=84666&start=10#p467195

A few months ago I had popped into this forum when I picked up a 2008 S60 for $500. I found myself in a predicament with a spun bearing, and I had a thread going for community assistance. Alas, I had to set the Volvo aside in order to concentrate on selling one house and buying another. I've been busy with all sorts of home improvement work, but I'm finally getting ready to revisit project Astrid.

I learned with my big outboard engine the rods are cryo frozen to make them very brittle, then put in a press fixture that breaks them clean without danger of bending.
It's faster than machining parts to tolerances.

The Volvo ends are cracked too. There are a lot of warnings in VIDA about mismatching and torquing them, in which case you just destroyed them
