I've replaced one on a P80 w/salvaged (junkyard) unit. Dead simple. Four torx bolts holding it in once you gently remove the plastic cover on the "arms."
Roof needs to be tilted, as opposed to partially retracted to manage. Helps to have a buddy when adjusting the "set" of the roof, i.e., is it flat and level, is one corner higher than another in the fully closed position, etc. Those adjustments are all little tweaks.

What doesn't work with it?

As above, the glass is easy to replace (the screws have red loctite so are quite hard to turn and should not be over-tightened) www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxyp5Ac-DGg

For the mechanism itself, I haven't done it (only repaired the sunshade small slips that break causing it to slide hard)

Best moment to also unclog the front drains while there

MDK here. I replaced my sunroof by myself. Actually.. it's a sunroof by day and a moon roof by night. Haha. I got one from th junkyard from an 850 wagon and installed it in a 1998 V70 XC. The hardest part was taking all the stuff apart to remove the headliner. After that I unplugged it and and removed the bolts that secure it to roof panel. And disconnected the four tubes for the drains. Then I fished it out.. I didn't have any help.. so I slid into the back of the wagon got underneath it and bench pressed to the roof with my feet and ran the torx bolts in... what a fiasco! But I got it done. The tub ...as they call it. I paid about 65$ at that time. All together it took me about 4 hours start to finish. MDK

I did not have to remove the headliner to do mine, but I was only replacing the glass panel due to rust around the perimeter frame.

I noticed the sunroof rattling slightly when the door is closed. Possibly not seating correctly when closing.

Does the shade cover move smoothly back and forth?

No, the shade does not slide smoothly. Had to work on house and cook for parents today; I try to move forward every day, but the V70 did not make the list today. I did find a plastic part in the guide, when I opened the sun roof to inspect it.

I have a couple complete sun roof units for your car OP if you would want to replace the whole thing. As far as the process goes, it's easy- the sunroof is all one unit (motor, tracks, glass, shade), and once you loosen the 10mm bolts it'll come down easily. The hardest part will be the headliner.

I traced the problem to the sun shade. My guess is there are clips/guides on the shade that are missing or broken. If so, is this an easily replaceable part? Sun roof operates smoothly, but binds and makes horrible noises when it interacts with the sun shade.
