Dashboard or DIM (Driver Information Module) repair

Post by dwaldron »

I read many posts about getting my DIM repaired.
I checked out many messages and the suggested companies to repair the DIM.
I am not affiliated with the company in this solution. However, I am very pleased with the results. $135

I have a Volvo V70 2002 Turbo.

My issues:
My clock counted at high speed like a stop watch. It did this on and off for 2 years.
Recently my dash went dark. A few times it came back briefly but then dead.

Diagnostics:
I found a flow chart on one of the repair sites. Basically it is this:

Is check engine light on when start?
....yes
........Is doors windows work?
............yes: send dim in for repair.
....no:
........ Open and close door, does dim work?
........ yes:
................repair CAN comm wires in door harness
no
....is your car a XC90?
........check fuse #24 in driver side fuse box
....no
........remove dim, check power term 1 violet white wire
........(I did this by putting a wire into the harness and using a voltage meter connecting
........ to the temp wire and the other end to metal inside dash)
........Is there power (12v DC)?
............yes
................check ground pin 14 brown, used a temp wire from prev step and another temp wire
................checked voltage across 2 temp wires
................is there power (12v DC)?
....................yes: send in dim for repair.
....................no: check ground terminal wire.
............no: see flow chart

Solution: $135
I called this place: europeanelectric
https://europeanelectric.net/products/v ... n-shipping
the do the following:
.... reflow the solder on the entire board
.... microsolder
.... check capacitors, replace if needed
.... replace lights

I received my unit 3 business days after I shipped it.
I installed it. The dash worked but the red error light was on.
I reset the codes using a AUTEL Maxdiag Elite. MD802

Note: you go through the above web page, pay for the repair, print out the receipt and put it in the box when you ship the DIM to
Ship info here: https://europeanelectric.net/p/shipping

key words: dashboard dead, dim dead, dashboard clock spin, dim clock spin, scrambled message, turn signal does not work

My 2003 did the same before it called it quits.

Another DIM was working fine for 5 min then all off but the check engien light

By the way, I have a 2003 XC70 DIM in my 2003 S60 FWD

There are several behaviors, and also several electronic components that go bad on the controller board - reason why the repair place must check the whole board thoroughly.
