2001 V70 T5 engine/trans installation in 2006 V70 2.5T questions

Post by peeperdacat » Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:24 pm

Hi. My 2001 V70 T5 Black Beauty with manual transmission was T-boned and destroyed. I found a great deal on a 2006 V70 2.5T with a bad engine. I want to install the 2001 T5 drivetrain (including the manual transmission) into the 2006 body.

My concerns are:
1) Will the car start up and run after we do this? Planning on using the computer from the 2001, unless I discover that the one from the 2006 will work. My Volvo mechanic friend suggested getting printouts from Volvo which may answer the computer question.

2) Will the car pass the North Carolina vehicle inspection? Concerned that the car won't meet emission requirements. I am going to check with NC State Patrol to find out if the emission requirements are different from a 2001 to a 2006.

Any advice would be welcome, along with anything else that may arise that I haven't thought of.

Thanks,
Will Davis

I would try it with the 2006 control modules first to avoid software conflicts. The two engines are close enough I think it would work with the 2006 control modules. Which turbo are you planning to use?

The control modules won't like each other. Different generations of CAN protocols and also even from the same year they'll notice they're not in the right car. So using the new cars modules is a given.

However since the engines don't match physically you probably won't get it to run properly with the software from the newer car.

Different CANBUS speeds too. That's going to be quite a kerfluffle

Okay. Thanks for the input. Here's a little more info. The 2001 V70 T5 I bought had been previously owned by a Volvo dealership mechanic friend of mine. He bought the car because it had a bad engine. He found a complete used replacement engine for it, and installed it. It ran fine, and he drove it for a number of years. Still ran great when I had it. I asked him where he found the engine, and if he used one from 2001. He did use a 2001 engine, and showed me this website: Car-Part.com. He showed me how to use my VIN no. to get the correct engine for my 2006 V70, in my case, a B5254T2. So if I find a complete 2006 B5254T2, then this should work fine, yes? At least it should according to my Volvo mechanic friend. I was only wanting to use the engine from my 2001 T5 because I already had it, knew it was a good engine, and I wanted to convert the 2006 V70 to a manual transmission. Will there be any problems if I install the aforementioned B5254T2 engine and try to use my manual trans? I'd really like to convert it to manual, but if that's going to cause problems, then I'll just forget that idea. Btw, would I really have to use an engine from 2006? Might a 2005 or 2004 work too as long as it's a B5254T2? And would if matter if the engine came from a different model than a V70 as long as it's a B5254T2? Thanks.

Correct psychical engine with the data boxes from the car receiving the transplant will work. So any year 2.5T from an S60 or V70.

Transmission swap on these cars will also freak out the network in them. Better get a manual working car to begin with instead of doing all this work. The auto is very well mated to the 2.5T though.

to make it short, B5254T2 isn't a part number, its an engine type. In the manufacturing world, that type of engine will use different parts based on the VIN number, so the engine type is not enough information to get compatible parts.

The kerfuffle you are headed for is when you put a manual trans in, the ECU will be looking for a TCU, and will code when it doesn't see it. From 1999 on, ECUs are keyed to VIN number, so you will have to find someone who can flash the ECU to your VIN and not look for the TCU.

Anything is doable, even faking a moonshot. That might be easier than this though.

Thanks. I am no longer going to attempt to use the manual trans. in this car. Too many if’s. I will take manual out of the wrecked car anyway in case I buy another V70 with a manual trans. and a bad engine one day.

Take a look on you 2006 head, do you have two CVVT solenoids? If the 2001 only ha some, that will be another trouble spot to adapt
