2001 V70 - Gear shift cable stuck in OLD Ignition Lock Housing - 100% SOLVED

Post by Chris45 » Tue Jan 29, 2019 11:33 am

Hi

I have 2001 Volvo V70 and key in my ignition lock was not able to go to position 1, 2 or 3. I could put key in and take it out but absolutely no turning key even for a milimetar. Obviously, ignition cylinder was 100% stuck so I bought NEW programmed Ignition Lock Housing and spent 5-6 hours to take down OLD Ignition Lock Housing.

As you know big problem is Volvo Shear Bolts so it was very, very hard for me to take down OLD Ignition Lock Housing. I succeeded to take it down but now I have another BIG problem - Parking Release Cable or gear shift cable won’t came off of Ignition Lock Housing. I am sorry for not knowing correct technical term but that is that thick black cable on key side of Ignition Lock Housing…and it won’t came off so that I can plug it in NEW Ignition Lock Housing and then mount new Ignition Lock Housing on my steering wheel.

Please know that on OLD Ignition Lock Housing I cannot move my key not even for a millimeter….no way that I can switch to position 1 or 2 o3 3….absolutely is stuck on ZERO position....so playing with a key is out of the picture....but I still have to detach that cable from old housing and attach it to a new.

Image

Please help…I am beaten down with this like never before. I deeply thank you for any advice …THANK YOU!!!!

Ideas:
  • 1. Have you tried disconnecting the other end of the interlock cable?
(Might get enough play to do something)

    2. You might be able to cut the bottom with a small hole saw to get to the interlock cable.
(I don't know what your see if you do. )

    3. Deep freeze the tumbler with liquid nitrogen then use a chisel to shatter it.

    4. Cut the tumbler and tumbler housing off. You might just need to cut around the housing.
    (Dremel cutting wheel)

    5. Drill out the lock tumbler them move to POS I.

    6. Get a new interlock cable.

You are squeezing whatever cable lock device is present, right?

What about that little square hole next to "Germany"? Can something be inserted there that would help release the cable?

Unfortunately the key needs to be turned to either Pos #1 or #2, I can't remember which, in order for it to let go of the cable. So what if you turn the whole assembly upside down and tap on it with a light hammer? Would that shake whatever is binding the tumbler loose so that you can turn the key?

Problem is SOLVED!!! To disconet that cable your ignition lock has to be switch from position 0 to position 1 and then you can pull out that cable. Same thing when you inserting cable into new Ignition Lock Housing...it has to be in position 1 and then you push in the cable.

My ignition lock cylinder was BLOCKED on position 0 so I had to drill cylinder until become useless so then I push in screwdriver and turn it to position 1 and then cable was pulled out.

Lot of work but you have no other solution when your Ignition Lock is blocked.

I assembled everything an now everything works. Total cost of new Ignition Lock Housing was $236 and that is much better than paying towing to tow my Volvo to licenced mechanic and then to pay for labour and parts....probably $1200 all together.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!

Re cannot go from position "0" to "1"...

I posted in another thread (where you remove the bottom plate for free): when you cannot go from "0" to "1", it is from a small broken piece that jams the cylinder. So if you look upward hard enough, you will see the broken piece, then just use a pair of tweezers to remove the broken piece...
