Seat Cushion Swap

2005 S60 2.5t Fwd

I’m looking to swap seats between driver and passenger only because of the foam starting to collapse on the drivers side. Any tips?
Should I swap or just put in new foam on the drivers seat?

There are a number of videos out there on foam seat repair. I suggest you watch a few and get an idea what is involved. Fixing the current seat is not terribly difficult, and you may be able to just do the bolster.

If you decide to swap you have to make sure the cushions are interchangeable - the mold needs to be the same. I don't recall. In addition you will have to do two seats and trying a repair may be easier.

Other option is to buy a used seat in better condition - if you cannot find the right color buy the cheapest best shape seat you can find and just swap the cushion. You may even be able to sell the covers. Make sure the seat design is the same.

Other item of concern is whether the passenger side seat has the weight sensor, which opens up another potential problem.

The cushion itself should be the same on both sides.

A cushion from a passenger seat at a pick and pull would be a good option, letting you practice on another seat while also only giving you one seat to put back together.

As above, don't mess with your pass seat because of that weight/SRS sensor, rather get a bottom section and the spring base from the junk yard

No for complete seat swap, just swap the bottom cushion complete with the foam, skin and spring base. You'll need a 2004-up seat. These are not too bad to swap because the spring base comes separate so you can work easier when attaching it - still it takes some conviction to stretch and attach these springs to the seat frame. No need to remove the whole seat and better don't disconnect any electrical connector (or at least unplug the battery) besides the heated seat plug. You may need to remove the seat bolts to flip the seat a little at a time to have access underneath. At the bottom of the seat, the skin of the bottom section would be attached with 3 metal clips that can be bent.

All the info is in the video. Watch when I talk about the 2004 seat, that's how yours it's going to be. Parts from a junkyard are cheap, go with a passenger seat that has been used very little.

I just removed 2 really mint seat bottom skins and cushions from the wreckers. Pretty easy job.
Start by going around and cutting the hog rings with side cutters, theres about 14 of them. Disconnect the wiring, really easy! Then peel the skin and cushion from back to front to reveal 4 more hog rings, cut these. Then slide the seat and cushion forward to remove cushion. Shouldn't take more than about 10 minutes to remove!
I also found on the same car a really mint seat back skin and padding. I spent about an hour and a half trying to get it off with no success before it started raining. I couldn't get the headrest to release for one, and then I sliced up my hands trying to get all those springs out. I assume the setback skin comes out with the padding? Has anyone done this and can offer any tips? Depressing the two headrest releases didn't release the headrest such that it would come out. I may go back tomorrow and try again but gave up from frustration.........and my hands looked like I'd been in a UFC fight, not really cool in Covid times!

Removing the skins from these seats is hard.

The head rests get stuck, dont release. only option is to remove skin or cut a hole.

the skins of the seat is the same either side, both bottom and back. The base however is not swappable, the back is swappable but you need to swap the airbag sides or bettter to install your original airbag. For a mechanical seat the recline will be on the wrong side, power seat the lumbar will be on wrong side.

As above, the upper seat part is harder than the lower cushion. Indeed, there's release tabs for the headrests, only they work very bad at releasing. This is almost a job for 2 persons: one will really press on the tab, while second one will force lift the headrest at that side. May even use a sort of pry bar to lift it, they get stuck and the metal rod is hard to slide, also has to slide at an angle. Mind you, on various seats, the release tabs are not at the same place. Speaking of hog rings, they bent quite easily with a long nose pliers
