Anybody know whether a B5254T3 would be compatible? Thanks.
The B5254T4 has different internals too: forged crank, different connecting rods and rod bearings. Would probably work fine but risks internal damage long term.

You can also consider a B5244T5, i.e. from an S60 T5, like 05-09. Or V70 but I think a narrower set of years. It's 9.0 but shipped with the same K24 turbo. But in your shoes I would probably try to be patient for a B5254T4, short of digging into it and wading through a lot of reading about what swaps people do with R vehicles.

The B5254T4 software running a B5254T5, same risk as going to a B5254T3. However if he going to take the risk he would be better off with a B5254T5 rather then a B5254T3.

A B5254T6, B5254T8, B5254T10 or B5254T11 should work as well as the B5254T5 and he is more likely to come upon a low mileage engine.

Rick I'm not following, why the strike-through here? I actually do mean the S60 T5 engine from the mid-2000's, which is the B5244T5. Not too hard to find, and people have actually used it for this swap, with R software. Smaller displacement and all. The B5254T5 has a bad history of cracked cylinder liners, so several other engines have actually been tested already with the R tune.

Whatever source you are copy-pasting from says the same thing. i.e. "2005-2009 Volvo S60 T5 (B5244T5 engine)."

Had my mind on the Rs overlooked the T5.
The B5244T5 has a bore of 81mm. The B5254T5 is 83mm. The B5244T5 cylinder liners are 1mm thicker and less prone to cracking, better reliability.

The B5244T5 might be a better choice for him. Probably sacrificing some of the 296 hp and 295 ft-lbs torque of the B5254T4 and perhaps pissing off some R purest but, it is his car and his pocket book, he can do what he pleases.

What the hell, R stands for Refined, not Racing or Rally. If one considers Reliability a Refinement they would be keeping with the spirit of the R badge.

Abscate sees $75/hr and starts planning to exploit that labor warranty ...

Warranty is only as good as the attorney enforcing it...we’ve got a good one for that....
