Had my mind on the Rs overlooked the T5.
I actually do mean the S60 T5 engine from the mid-2000's, which is the B5244T5. Not too hard to find, and people have actually used it for this swap, with R software. Smaller displacement and all. The B5254T5 has a bad history of cracked cylinder liners, so several other engines have actually been tested already with the R tune.
4T5 has a bore of 81mm. The B525
4T5 is 83mm. The B524
4T5 cylinder liners are 1mm thicker and less prone to cracking, better reliability.
4T5 might be a better choice for him. Probably sacrificing some of the 296 hp and 295 ft-lbs torque of the B525
4T4 and perhaps pissing off some R purest but, it is his car and his pocket book, he can do what he pleases.
What the hell, R stands for Refined, not Racing or Rally. If one considers Reliability a Refinement they would be keeping with the spirit of the R badge.
