Approx cost of windshield replacement

Post by mdewalle » Thu Aug 08, 2019 2:51 pm

My son was driving my V70 and was too close to a dump truck. A rock hit the windshield and we now have a star that is about 2 inches across. Definitely bigger than a US quarter.

I expect to need a new windshield. Any idea of what cost I should expect? My insurance deductible is $500 so it will probably come out of pocket. This is a 2001 V70 2.4T.

Thanks!

May depend on where you are. Safelite just did mine for $351, but caused $500+ worth of damage to the roof paint work in the process. To their credit, they have agreed to pay for the repair work.

I forget some of the other brands but Pilkington is good one to go with. I had a windshield installed on 2002 CRV. The glass company went with a Chinese made glass and right at eye level on the driver's side there was a blur  . Being they had a good reputation they went ahead and replaced it with a Pilkington which is OEM to many car companies.

I would check out Yelp in your area and ask what it cost for an OE quality glass not a made it China. I would say anywhere from $200 to $300. The major companies will charge you more.

I had mine replaced about four years ago after I cracked it with my elbow when removing the shift lever. It took the guy all of about 25 minutes start to finish. At the time it was about $140 for a Pilkington without rain sensor. If you have a rain sensor you’ll pay a bit more.

Not to sound braggadocios, but I've never paid for a windshield (edit), and have replaced I’d say 13-14 of them in the last 23 years.

I just had the windshield replaced on our 2006 XC70 last week - $0.

Just add full glass coverage & claim it later on when its starts to get cold out. Most of our vehicles it's very inexpensive - like $10-20 a year.

The original Volvo glass is exceptional in quality & it's ability to cast stones aside without damage. I kid you not, our 280k XC70 still has the original windshield in it. It's not perfect, but compared to vehicles with even half that mileage it looks great.

Nod, on the current XC70 I just repolished it with DeWalt polisher and cerium oxide, was far better than aftermarket Pilkinton after just one year of use. Unfortunately, those gravel roads and log truck took it out shortly after.

See if your city has a "glass district", I kid you not.

There's a strip in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge / Sunset Park) where sidewalk easels read "Windshields $XXX" as if they were diner specials.
Last time I did it was in 1989 (?) for a 1976 Ford E-150. It was $125. That was a while back.
The one in Queens is behind Citifield.

If you have the rain sensor - and you want it to continue to work - you will likely need OEM. I have had the windsheild replaced 5 times over 15 years of ownership and every single time they try with an aftermarket the sensor doesn't work. The last time it happened (3 years ago) I just told the insurance company to just throw the first 3 in the trash (aftermarket) and save me the time of watching it not work.

I'm sure the agent rolled her eyes, but she did immediately authorize OEM.

If you have the rain sensor but don't care if it works, simply unplugging it from the sensor will turn the steering wheel controls into a regular intermittent system.
