2007 2.4 vvt tension release on timing belt job
Hello , I am about to start the timing belt job and have been looking online and some line up the marks rotate 1/4 to 1/2 turn clockwise and then counter clockwise back to the timing marks to release the tension for the vvt, is this the proper procedure? I have done the job on my 98 v70 before , but not on a vvt engine. Thanks for any advice.

NO. On 2002 and later with big hub CVVT and all with low profile CVVT you only need to try to move the hub CW and CCW and assure it is locked. This will be indicated by it having a small amount of motion. If it moves one way or the other and then snaps to a point with that little wiggle then it was unlocked to start. Once locked you place it with mark aligned and snug the center bolt. Fit belt, loosen center bolt, release tensioner and then poke belt on a run to left and to right of belt to assure that the CVVT hub has opportunity to move and allow belt to be tensioned equally all around. Now torque the center bolt (TX55) to 89 ft-lb for that engine. AND be sure to remove the rear of cam holder. New gears will not be marked. The marks are only for timing belt removal later. The crank and cams being right place when belt is fitted and gears allowed to take their place sets cam timing. If there is no mark you scribe it or notch it with a triangle file. Often the marks are off a bit from manufacturing placement of the marks and some engines may have marks so slight it is hard to tell if they are in fact the mark.

- If you have done the 98 V70, then the VVT model timing belt job is somewhat similar.
- As long as you don't remove the VVT hub, then it is simple. All the engine cares is: all 3 lines up (crank and 2 VVT cam gears).
- Mark the gears with whiteout paint before removing old belt.
- Use only Volvo Genuine kit which includes TB, idler pulley and tensioner pulley. About $120 or so.
- Use this opportunity to replace the serp belt + idler pulley (INA).
- Re WP: if factory WP (Aisin), then it is good for about 180K or so.
- I wrote a detail procedure below...

Thanks cn90, I had already read your instructions multiple times and have them bookmarked. Thanks for posting them. Guess I was spooked by the vvt.
