Could those hanger rods be tapping into each other? Piece of rubber in between them, maybe?

Here are few observations while idling and I'm under the car.

• the tapping sound is closer to the rear quadrant of subframe - passenger side

• for a moment it felt like coming from the outer cv boot area - passenger side

• the tapping rate sped up with compressor engaging, the rate goes back down with compressor disengaging

Is the front motor mount a suspect - is there a way to isolate?

Does it coincide with small surface imperfections in the road?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. I’m wondering if your original sway bar bushings are worn to the point that you’re hearing the bar making percussion noise?

The front sway bar is right there in that vicinity & is an a annoying & slight sound. The bar on my 04 XC70 285k miles rattles a bit. My 04V70 AWD is beginning to emit a similar sound.

The tapping rate changes with compressor on/off. I'll take jimmy's approach, ignore and drive to see if it gets louder to seek attention.

Found a 3mm deep strip across the width of the s.belt. It is a newly installed Conti product during the timing belt task. Is it normal?

Not on any of my belts have i seen that. Ive checked them thoughly for damage

Conti T-belt is not "even": one side is thinner than the other, or something along that way. Belt tends to slide to the outer edge of the sprocket. OE belt does not do that.

Serpentine belt will eventually cost you a PS pump. It is either a bit too short, or it does not stretch/flex enough, so it requires a lot of force to put it on the pulleys, and that force remains there after the tensioner is released. One Conti belt in my car had even shredded along the treads, about 1/3 of its width. The kevlar threads made their way under the t-belt, it jumped one tooth at exhaust sprocket. I got a replacement Conti belt, was amidst painful installation process when figured out that PS pump is knocking badly. Had PS pump replaced ($380, ouch!), got Volvo belts, both. No more Conti belts, no more belt problems. Volvo serpentine belt is a much easier to install.

Yes, I've got the correct Conti belt. The shorter one wouldn't even fit, because longer barely fits.

The s-belt is Contitech 6DK1841 from FCP.

sometimes the aftermarket product is produced at the same factory as the "genuine volvo" product at a much reduced price. I recently bought a Denso sensor for less than half the price of the "genuine" volvo sensor made by Denso. Exact same item in different box.

Some items are easy because they have the made by company stamped, but belts do not.

I looked at the Volvo belt that came off the car closely, and did not notice any such marks. The ribs on old one has started to crack.

What is FCP quality assurance practice – none?

Is that a groove in the belt? As in, can you catch your fingernail in it? Or is it just a different color? It’s hard to tell from the photo.

If it’s a groove I’d definitely get a replacement from FCP. They’ll take care of you I’m sure.
