2002 Volvo S60 loud Squeaking engine noise

Post by marshg2k »

Hey Guys,

I have an otherwise excellent 2002 Volvo S60 with a strange but loud squeaking engine noise. The car had an oil leak (From the Crankshaft VVT solenoid gasket) that was fixed. But still there is this loud squeaking sound but only happens when the engine warms up.
The sound is coming from the pulleys (crankshaft, timing belt etc) end of the engine. I checked all the belts and they seem fine with correct tensions and none of the pulleys seems off.
You can listen to the engine sound while cold and after warming up. The car still drives fine even with the noise.
Thanks

- Remove the belt, spin ALL the pulleys (belt pulley, alternator pulley etc.).
- I bet you the pulley grease has dried up.

What is the mileage and service history? Were the pulleys/belt ever replaced?

At 163K, get new Conti serp belt and INA pulley. I posted PN etc in this forum.

PS: regrease pulley only if you are short of budget. Search for the post I made on bimmerfest E39 forum...

Have you run the engine without the acc belt?

Nope .. I have not done this. I was thinking of doing it so thanks for your comment. Is it possible after the oil leak the ACC belt could somehow be slipping and the reason for the noise. I know the timing belt has "teeth" so it would not slip and if it did there would be a performance issue with the car and there is not. But the ACC belt has no "teeth" or "grooves" it is a flat belt. Could it be slipping?

remove the serp belt to make sure its not the timing belt making the noise. or you can get a belt lube and rub it on the belts..its probably your serp belt, i think my serp belt is noisy also when hot.

i removed the serp belt but the issue is still there. So its not the serp belt, idler pulley, alternator or the a/c compressor. so i am left with the camshaft pulley, the crankshaft pulley, the timing belt and the tensioner. How do I lubricate the pullies? That seems like the next logical step.

its safer to swap the pulley and tensioner out, they're cheap enough.

It could be water pump pulley too or the tensioner might be over tightened and distorted.
Some guys mention spraying water on pullies to find the squeaky wheel, I'd rather just swap the lot out.
any noise or potential problem in that belt area can kill the engine, even at idle speed.

How is the PCV test ? Does the sound change if you pull the dipstick or remove the oil filler cap ?
Do you know which parts were used for the timing belt at 100k ? Was the water pump replaced ? I would not drive the car until finding the culprit, a cheap water pump will seize all of a sudden and the engine will be gone
