This is why I love non-interference engines. Spun the teeth off the cam sprocket of my '94 Cherokee. Just died while driving. No mechanical sound at all. Just died like the plug was pulled. Only had 150k on the timing set. Won't comment on " import " parts.
But apx 4 hours later all replaced. You just have to love the simplicity of these engines.

When I was a kid in school, I tried to start my '73 Capri V6 at 20 below zero (F). It cranked, made a funny sound, then hissed out the carb every stroke until I stopped. After some confusion, I figured out the fiber timing gear teeth had sheered off and the valve train was not moving while it cranked. Figured it out because the distributer rotor was not turning. Non-interference engine and nothing bent!

This one had me stumped because when I checked the rotor, it did move some because there were still some teeth left. Just not as many.
But it seemed slow to rotate. Eventually figured that regardless of movement, only explanation left was a timing chain failure. I wasn't expecting to find an intact chain, but stripped sprocket.
I can't understand why manufactures would make interference engines. My son has a Ranger with a V6. They offered two V6's for that truck. One is interference, one is not. Really ? Go figure....
