What did you do on your P1 Volvo today?

Post by scot850 »

I noticed there was not this general section at the start of this forum section unlike in some of the others like the P2 and P80 sections.

So I am suggesting we add one for here and see if one of the kind administrators can pin it to the top for us!

So in the spirit of the title, my new young V50 T5 manual AWD friend and I tackled some of the 'interesting' work done by at least the previous owner.

To fix the lack of boost, we first checked the intercooler pipes were all sound and as best we could, visual 3 of the sides of the intercooler. Some of the hoses were loose but not disconnected. It has highlighted that the hose into the intercooler on the LHS could do with replacement. Interesting it is stamped with the FoMoCo legend on it.........!

We have also found that legend on the front calipers, muffler system and the PEM.

The car still seems to me to have a very slight misfire, but no check light. Next weekend or when he has time we will look for codes. I suspect either plugs or plugs and coils may be well overdue. Problem is with around 150,000 miles he has no service history so we are going to have to do a rolling Stage 0. He is hoping as and when he has money after that to add some more urgency to the car....!

Awesome and great to know there is someone else out there with this car. Generally I can figure most stuff out, I have a copy of Vida which helps somewhat too for parts ID and repair info. But sometimes you find that issue you just can't make sense of!!

So much appreciated!

Well, although not technically my car, I am working with the owner to try to rehabilitate and reverse some of the injustices the last owner inflicted on the poor beast.

I think I have now got to about 90% on being sure the wrong front brake pads have been installed. I am now about 99.9% sure the calipers are correct for the 320mm rotors (leaving 0.5% for error!). And for that to be correct the mounting bracket has to be correct for it as I now realize the smaller rotors use a different caliper and bracket.

Also identified the car has IAQS climate system and not the standard system which naturally adds $15 CDN to the filter. I can get a 2 pack of suitable carbon filters from Amazon for about $28 and with the number of forest fires over the last few years they need changed a fair few times.

Also identified part numbers and which muffler rubber mounts we will replace. We will replace the 2 on the rear muffler box (the car has twin tailpipes), one each end, as well as the 2 on the bracket holding the cat in place. We already replaced the one at the rear subframe with a $5 Auto Value generic part which fitted perfectly. At least the muffler has been macgivered back into suspension. Had to do some creative modification to the previous bodged hanger on the LHR side of the muffler. Someone replaced the hanger that had rusted off the tailpipe with a pies of roughly shaped re-bar and tried to weld it to the pipe poorly so it has fallen off again. I used a muffler clamp I have for some reason and clamped it over the 2 parts and around the tailpipe and it now is held firmly in place until the owner can get his welding buddy to reweld it.

Broken ABS sensor is now in stock at GermanParts.ca locally so that can be collected and fitted this weekend.

The one remaining oversized rear truck mudflap has been removed by taking out the 10-12 screws holding it on. Idea was good to have a mudflap, but reality and stupidity won out. It hung so low when backing up in deep snow it caught and ripped the inner fender liner from the bumper and the lower section of the bumper tearing out the plastic mounting points. I have no re-instated it using washers and Volvo mudflap and fender liner rivets from a P80. Did a good job and now it is solid. There is also another plastic undertray just infront of the rear wheel which had been pulled out of the fender liner mount. That was straightened and refitted.

The other side we will need to some plastic repairs as that fender liner was ripped off completely. We may have to try find some used replacement parts!

We have to look at the RH rear brake and parking brake to see why it is only partially working.

Another thing we need to do is re-instate the IPD skid plate under the engine. But like everything else we have work to do as one of the 2 rear mounting bolts has been sheared off level to the surface. It is mounted in a threaded tube on the top of which the steering is mounted into so we will have to remove the mount, pour plenty of PB Blaster from the top side, and then try to drill it out and check the threads are good. Finally we will have to source some mounting hardware including stainless steel washers as the previous mild steel ones have done a number on the aluminum skid plate.

So plenty to get on with then. Oh, almost forgot we need to identify the slight misfire that is not throwing a code yet. Time to start stoking the stem powered Vida laptop for the weekend and see what it may reveal!

Doing my first head gasket. Just checked today and I am currently at the tolerance threshold for warpage, so I'm gonna just sent it. Gonna hand lap valves next when the removal tool shows up tomorrow. Also preparing to glue new headliner material to the backing board.

Just got a text from the V50 owner. New alternator has pooped itself. This is the 2nd alternator he has had fail in the couple of months he has had the car. Not sure of the brand, but bought from Amazon.............!

Hopefully it has a warranty that is not a white line one!

AS many have found, the quality of alternators, both 'new' and rebuilt/remanufactured, even from Bosch can be very poor and very much a lottery as to how long they last. I've texted him to see if he has the previous one and if it was a Volvo one and has good bearings.

If the answer is yes to both, might be worth throwing an new voltage regulator in there. I haven't looked at a P1 alternator to see if that is even possibe!
