Owner indicated purchased with tick and dirty oil. Didn't drive it long without an oil change and the knocking started. Willing to give it up for $1K. Your thoughts?

Sounds like the typical rod bearing failure on these later T5s. Unfortunately this isn't unheard of.
.

The video indicated the bad knock was just oil starvation. Could it be that bad without any rod or crank bearing damage?

If there's a bottom end knock, it's almost certain that there's damage to the bearings.

Agreed, wish the interior was better but this one looks worth investigating.

I'll post up my latest buy. Kid crashed his 07 Ford Focus so was on the hunt for something sub-$3000 and decent, a difficult task these days.

Hello Facebook Marketplace:

2005 XC90 2.5T AWD
190k miles
Was asking $3000, bought at $2500
The good: new tires, new battery, new alternator, recent timing belt and pulls good suction from oil cap, runs and drives well
The bad: codes for EVAP and anti skid, wet a-pillars, filthy interior
Guy had owned it since 114k and while did some repairs/maintenance clear he wasn't DIY for little stuff.

In my first 12-14 hrs: deep clean the interior, replaced wheel speed sensor, replaced windshield washer motor, pulled small dent in fender, oil and filter change, pulled a-pillars to find expected pinched/disconnected sunroof drains, lubed sticky liftgate handle, replaced all wipers, polished headlight lenses and replaced low beam bulbs.

After a run through the car wash it cleaned up well. Needs seat covers and decided I will spring for new a-pillars at $100/pop to get the interior in decent shape. eBay yaw sensor on order for Anti Skid, sunroof drains and air filter arrive this week. Will eventually change the drivetrain fluids and Haldex filter once I take a breather from first fixes.

I'm thankful my labor is free  , hope to be in it a touch over $3500 by time I am done. Barring any surprises should be good for 250-300k miles. Only regret is I maybe should have negotiated for a little less, but so far so good.

Car prices are falling fast these days. If you can wait, I'd recommend it.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

The price of new cars was getting out of hand and the recent interest rate hikes makes them unrealistic for many, even used cars.

I looked a bit as I didn't need a car for my kid asap but this XC90 had a familiar drivetrain and all the issues were known and fixable. Right now I like the idea of having an extra car around and running these old 150k+ Volvos as the ownership cost is tough to beat. Always great when you can buy a car with $50 bills!
