Thanks the thread is very helpful. I had the same issues before and pump and switch had been replaced. and now the switch is broken again. This time I used my favorite extremely strong double side type to seal the top and it works again. You can try if you have the same issue.
In fact I took out the switch and open the top part and found the sensor is very simple: it stays the original place for closed without vac. if vac, then the pole inside was sucked by vac and pull the stick inside backward and the strong spring inside was pressed, and then the switch is open.
The problem is the seal of the top part is broken. so the easy fix is to seal it.
we can see there was a black tape around it (see the place marked by the green arrow), just peel it off, and use epoxy to seal the place covered by the black tape. I don't have epoxy in hand, so use a tape to seal it. The tape is a very strong tape and is sucked in a little bit when the pump runs.

You an also put a zip tie around that to keep it tightly closed, successfully
You will lose your brake assist if it flies apart completely so make your repair robust, or strong

Interesting to note that my '01 seems to not have this brake switch. Either it's hidden somewhere away from the air filter, or it's not there at all. And I've scoured the majority of crevices under the hood. Perhaps it's a different design.
