Well my mechanic buddy and I did 2 good deeds today (he gets paid by owners at 'mates' rates for his time).
First a P1 we fixed the broken trans cooler line on and then he sold back to the owner. On the way back a few weeks ago to drop it off it threw an emissions code for the emissions pump. What a stupid place to place it. Just inside the RR wheel tucked up between the rear right spring, the rear subframe and the fuel tank. Vida has you dropping the rear shock bolt and rear spring to get access. 2 hour job. With his experience all done in about 45 mins without any suspension dropping just the rear wheel. It helped having 2 to get the mounting screws for the pump back in but all good. Owner absolutely thrilled and off she went.
2nd, is another friends 06 S60 AWD. Car going into limp mode but throwing code for fuel sensor. A used one and even a new Bosch one did not fix it.
We stripped the NAF which was really filthy and cleaned it, cleaned the connector and refitted it. Also checked the air filter and box. Filter was filthy as was the filter box so it was cleaned and I had a spare air filter for our V70 so we fitted that.
Car started and rev'd out and no longer a horrible stink from the tailpipe of unburnt fuel.
Clearing the codes and the car did not instantly go into limp mode. However, restarting the engine check light came back on for fuel pressure. Nothing else for it but fire up the steam powered Vida to try and check live data for fuel pump cycle.
Once my buddy showed me how to access the info, the fuel pump duty cycle was 60%. Spec is for 40%, so pump is bad. Lucky for the owner Volvo replaced it about 4 years ago (disappointing) and so is covered by lifetime warranty. I'll now arrange to get it in to them next week to check and fix.
However, I still think there is another underlying issue with the TB. Moving the car this afternoon the car started to 'hunt' on idle which for me is a classic throttle body issue. So that may still be needed after the pump for full fitness.
I've added a picture of the P2 headlight after final polish and coating. My mechanic buddy was amazed!
He was also thrilled to get his P1 floor mats and the hard framed load cover for his C30.
The joys of old cars!

The throttle body actuator (ETA)mon p2 cars is analog(ue) driven so no software matches needed. That makes junkyard part or even new part replacement a lot easier. I would still smoke test and vacuum line check before firing the ETA cannon, though.

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately been there a few times with the TB on P1/P2 cars (post 2002 P2). I still have the physical scars on my arms from the 02 XC70! Got to be one of the stupidest designs where the plastic intercooler to TB pipe jams on the starter motor wiring studs making fitting it a real challenge, even with the cooling fan removed. P1 is a lot easier.
I do like that the TB are 'dumb' units not requiring programming. Don't like the poorly designed and flimsy wiring connector which is easily broken requiring running a new wire from the ECU to the TB (yes Volvo sell a small harness for this).
I have a low mileage TB (Aftermarket) that came from a write off car with only 5kkm on it I got from a friend. A Rock Auto Bosch unit is around $350 CDN shipped so not too terrible.
Often a good careful clean and disassembly of the motor and giving it a little lube and checking the gear teeth (they strip out) and it can be good to go again.

My buddy and his son dropped their limp mode S60 at one of the local dealers and left the key yesterday. They left a note to call me.
I had already sent them an email detailing what my buddy and I had evaluated from our analysis of the car going into limp mode.
I got a note from my friend the senior service advisor to say he had gone out to bring the car into the arrival area to check it in but the car would not shift out of park. Had the car been towed there?
I called and left a message saying the car had been driven there yesterday and no issues with the trans at that time. Then I recalled a few months ago the son had called me to see how to get his car to move as it would not come out of park. My buddy got a call from me and said it was likely the shift cable had come off under the center console. Pull the side cover off on the LHS, look for a yellow connector and stick it back onto where it needs to be. Duly done and the car had been fine since. Why it decided to play silly today at the dealer who knows. I suggested they pull the side cover and check the cable. They sent an apprentice out and just removing the cover the car was back to shifting normally again??
The service manager also contacted me to say unfortunately for warranty work they had to confirm the diagnosis and there was an hours labor charge. Fair enough.
Got a call this afternoon to confirm our diagnosis and they have ordered a pump under warranty and it should be in in a couple of days. Only other thing was when they do this pump swap part of the procedure is to clean everything in the fuel tank and then fit the new pump and replace the filter. The filter is not covered even though it is part of the procedure?? What??
I told them to check the front passenger floor as there was a new fuel filter sitting there just in case..................
In fairness they don't make the rules, but it is crazy that the pump fails but the procedure requires the filter to be changed but as the filter was not the issue (as far as we know) it is not covered. Crazy!
I still think there may be an issue with the TB causing the idle to pulse. But we will have to see what happens when the pump has been replaced.

Just got a call from my wife the 'new' 06 V70 AWD has flashed up a 'Stop Light' warning. Had to look up what the heck that is. Sounds like a brake light is out. It is just being a pain as I am about a week away from stripping all the inner rear panels out and taking the car to a local electronics store to fit the back up camera and the new bluetooth head unit. I was planning to check the upper taillight that is fitted to the spoiler my buddy fitted to the car with the high level light in it. When he connected the light he got a stop light waring light immediately, and so disconnected it and re connected the original one. I have of course now bought a whole upper tailgate spoiler light and it may have been another brake light bulb causing the issue. I guess I will find out!
Had to (
) take a run to 2 of the local junkyards today. There was an 05 I wanted to check in a yard just in case it had electrically folding mirrors. The only other PnP had the 07 V70 I pulled the folding mirrors from. I was hoping the 05 being a turbo might have the -06 folding mirror but wasted my time as it didn't. Of course when I got home they listed another S60 (an 01) turbo had just arrived...........
I then went to another yard to retrieve the RH door mirror cover. One of the 07 mirrors I have (LH) has 2 of the locating tabs broken off. I pulled one from a P1 as they are supposed to be the same. Got home to find the P1's, while they fit they have what looks like a small 'spoiler' on the top of them. The P2 ones don't have this. So return visit to the the matching one. They charges me $2 each! I just looked up the on-line Canadian Volvo dealer price, $250 each??? Ok they come painted. I have bought paint for $60 in rattle cans with 2k clear coat and plastic primer. Those will now be my next project. I will repaint the 2 of the P1 ones and also the 07 originals ( even the broken 07 original) as back ups. Little extra work to paint 4 than 2!
Naturally while there I got a few other small parts although I don't really need P1 parts.
Neil.

Got a call from the Volvo dealer early this morning. They had finished fitting the new fuel pump and filter (pump under warranty) to my friend's son's S60 AWD. They had check the pump duty cycle at various levels including filling it to full with 93 gas. The pump worked perfectly with a duty cycle of 35% (Spec is 35 +/- 5%).
However, when they mechanic took it for a run and was accessing the highway it went back into limp mode. Oh!
They had then run diagnostics and confirmed the Throttle Body had an internal fault. I said to check my initial notes to them saying I had suspicions of the TB being bad but was waiting to confirm it once the pump was replaced. They asked if they should replace it or was I fixing it. They suspected I would when they told me a new Volvo TB was $1500 CDN. I have a low mileage Vemo pump with 5kkm on it before the car was rear ended and totaled. I told then I would have it fixed and let the owner know.
My buddy and I talked it over and he decided the best option was to buy an new Bosch TB and I'll get my buddy to fit it. So I sent him a Rock Auto email with the part to be ordered and they are doing that. They will also go get the car from Volvo and limp to my house and leave it until the TB arrives next week.
Progress at least. That is typical, not one fault but 3 big ones and the poor car tried to keep running.
Neil.
