1992 240 DL Turn Indicator fuse keeps blowing

Post by Lapelpin »

The turn indicator fuse keeps blowing and I have been unable to find a resolution.

I have had the wiring checked, replaced all bulbs, replaced the left rear printed circuit which showed some signs of corrosion, cleaned the fuse panel which also had some minor corrosion but nothing has worked. At the recommendation of my mechanic I am now using a 25A fuse which has also been blowing but not at the rapid frequency of the 16A. Any thoughts?

The car is a 240DL Sedan with 163,000 miles.

Thanks.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

1998 240 or 1990 240?

The '90 model has the reversing lights on the same fuse. Does the fuse blow when you are indicating left and right or is it only on one side? Has it blown when you were using only the reversing lights?

Your mechanic is obviously not a trained auto-electrician or he would never advise using a higher rated fuse. This is potentially dangerous.

It's a 1998. The fuse blows when indicating either left or right. The tail lights are the only other thing on the circuit. I have removed the tail lights and the fuse keeps blowing.

It's a 1998
The 240 went out of production in 1993.

Bill,

Sorry for the screw up. It's a 1992 240 (my other car is a 1998 Honda that I have been having problems with too) Everything else is the same. Again, sorry!

No problem. The 1990 has the reversing lights on the same fuse so Volvo did some changes to the wiring for '92.

You do also have the heated mirrors on the same fuse but, unless you are using the demist system every time the fuse blows, they shouldn't affect things.

You have listed the checks you have done but does fuse #9 blow when you use the hazard warning lights? The turn signals and hazard warning lights are on different fuses but share the same relay.

The hazards work fine and have not blown a fuse; that's been tested a number of times.

Yes, not using the correct fuse is not a good idea.

I drove around without overdrive for about 2 months while I diagnosed a problem with the OD fuse constantly blowing. By some chance, I discovered that one of my heated seat switches triggered the blow. So, I wouldn't completely discount the turn switch as I had discounted my seat switch.

I agree with Darrell. Having checked and ruled out wiring, bulbs, bulb holders and fuse panel you are left with the possibility of a faulty switch.
