850 95 cruise control mystery

Post by salts850 »

Cruise control would work fine, but once i used my knee to steer it cut out. Whenever pressure was applied upward the cruise shut down. It's now totally inop and I get the "not enough speed' code. Inspected the entire steering column for chaffed and/or shorted wires. Even replaced the cc sw. I'm baffled. Has anyone run into this problem? Help please, my car is falling apart fast!

Check the switch right above the break pedal. I had the exact same problem with the not enough speed code. There's a switch above the brake that comes out and the break presses on it. Basically you have to adjust the switch. There's a slider thing in the switch, pull that out so that it is always making contact with the brakes.

If you need more help, I can post a diagram if you'd like

Ah i'll just upload it. THere's a switch/valve for the clutch and a switch for the brake. So, if you have an automatic, you obviously won't have a clutch. But here's what it says in the manual.

"Brake & Clutch Valves
Valves are self-adjusting. If Manual adjustment is desired, depress pedal until pedal arm does not make contact with the valve. Pull out plunger (on the valve) as far as possible and release pedal slowly. Plastic catches in the valves will hold piston in correct position."

I'm 90% sure this is your problem. I had this exact problem and readjusting my valve/switch fixed it. Be careful not to pull up on your brakes though, or you'll have to do this again.

Ok, I located and adjusted the cc sw on the brake pedal. However it didn't make a bit of difference. I'm only getting code 122 to low of speed/ no speed input. I know it's a normal code, but there are no other codes. I did just notice that my cc light in my ipc is no present. Would this cause it not to work?

If you have not yet downloaded the manual you need to do so from here:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip

Once you unzip it see the file named Cruise Control System.pdf and see the parts about putting the system through the diagnostic mode tests. You can test each function individually and easily track down why it isn't working.

OK, over the weekend I went through all the cc tests with response codes. Everything checked out ok. I was still baffled. I did adjust the screw on the gas pedal for the vacuum servo. I'm not 100 % sure this was the culperate, but the cruise works now and when i push up on the steering wheel with my knee it doesn't cut out. I did replaced my bcm a couple days before and the lights were off for abs. Over the weekend i went in and checked for codes to be cleared. No codes were present, so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with my cruise not working, but it works. I'm sorry i can't give the actual fix to my mystery.

Check the connector and the wires at the connector that go to the turn signal stalk. For whatever reason the wires must get stressed in some condition and they get to a "just barely making contact" state. I think MIJ had a similar problem and did some documentation in the repair database.

The holding up the steering column with your knee and it works part of the equation points me in that direction.
