V70 start stall issue

Update on the start/stall issue:

I finally got around to pulling the MAF sensor off the air cleaner box this weekend. I sprayed the MAF cleaner through the opening as volvomileage suggested. There was a circular center portion to it that I think is where the sensor wires reside. I sprayed that. There is also a small nipple like part that protrudes from one of the radius arms outside the center part. I sprayed that too. I sprayed the entire inside walls and all just for good measure, then let it dry all afternoon, and then put her back together.

Results: The car started right up, ran very nicely. No start/stall problem. However the second time I started it, no start/stall problem, but the CEL came on. My ODBII reader now gives a new code. P0135 - pre cat O2 sensor heater error. I cleared the code and drove the car more, runs great, but the CEL came eback on again throwing a P0135. This is the only code the reader picks up.

So, is my oxygen sensor bad, or is this an error related to the MAF sensor providing faulty info to the computer? It has to be more than a coincidence since it occured right after cleaning the MAF sensor.

At this time, the CEL is on but the car is running fine. No start/stall problem yet, but that was always intermittant so it could easily come back.

i would clear the code drive and see if it comes back , make shure you clear all codes at the same time..

I already cleared the code and CEL three times already between last night and today. The first drive always runs code free. On the second start however, even though she is running fine, the CEL comes on and the P0135 code is back. No other codes at this time.

I am reluctant to start ordering sensors... looks like each one (MAF or O2)goes for $190ish online... that adds up fast.

are you getting an error code for the maf or the o sensor ? or are you getting an other error code for an other component ?

if the error code is persistent i would be inclined to change the part..unless someone else might have a trick or better idea it might be a long shot but have you checked if the connectors are properly locked ? just in case...

My original problem was a start/stall symptom with no CEL, but registering a code P1081. The Actron scan tool described a MAF error and an Imobilizer error for a P1081. So I cleaned the MAF sensor.

Now, the start/stall symptom has not happened, but I get the recurring CEL with a code P0135 and only that single code at this time.

I suppose I am fishing to see if a failing MAF sensor can cause O2 sensor errors or whether the O2 sensor is just the next thing to fix?

well to give you an idea of the work of those two components, the maf will meter air mass to help the ecu mesure a correct amount of fuel and air mixture and the o2 sensor will give feedback to the ecu to tell it if fuel is burned efficiently or not or if ajustements are needed to the air/fuel mixture.
an efficient o2 sensor would help to close the loop, i am guessing here that after cleaning the maf the defective component got picked up by the ecu in this case the o2 sensor. in you case this error code always shows up after clearing and driving.

As I am now shopping for O2 sensors, I have read up a bit. Lots of folks have indicated that the universal sensors don't work, you have to buy OEM.

FCP $189
Eeuroparts $214.90
IPD $204.50
DW Volvo $287

OUCH!

If my research is correct, it appears both Bosch and Denso can be OEM.
The Bosch part is #912-5583, but I found a Denso #234-9020 for $141 online.

The Denso pic appears the have the correct harness and plug, (4 wire, 2 on top, 2 beneath, not 4 inline).

Anybody have any guidance as to whether the Denso O2 sensor will work?

in fact these volvo's are very picky with the electronic parts , i ve had german cars and they were working well with non oem parts, but the volvo is a different animal...

i am pretty shure one of the members would be glad to share what worked or not on their cars, bosch should be the same as oem if i am not mistaken...and having delt with fcp i can tell you i am satified with their service and pricing apart from the aftermarket parts (scantech) they sell...
if you have a bit of time look around as prices can vary for same part

I just bought the Bosch front O2 sensor at Amazon for less than $90 with free shipping. 98 V70 GLT.
