fuel gauge not working

Post by steve smith »

OK so I removed my gas tank from my car to repair a hole where the previous owner had driven a screw thru the tank.In doing so I took the panels off in trunk located the connector that was for the wiring going into fuel pump area pushed the rubber grommet thru in spare tire area to pull connector out thru hole to remove gas tank so as to not have to remove fuel pump to get tank outwent out undamaged went back in the same way now when I hooked the connector back up after reinstalling the gas tank the gauge does not no longer work and the low fuel light stay on continuously. The only thing I did was drain the gas tank buy standing it on its end to let fuel drain back out the filler neck whole on fuel punp flange. So anyone got any ideas why the gauge is now not working I checked for power at connector pink wire gets 12 volts white and black wire gets 5.6 volts and brown I get nothing and of course the ground is working tested it also

Don't be mad Steve, at least people are looking to see if they can help you. Some things might take a day or two before someone can give you an answer. Just be patient, you will find an answer :)

Do you really want speculation, which may do no good, or do you want a reasoned answer which may fix the car?

I haven't come across this problem before so waited until I could ask a Volvo tech. It was at this point I noticed you hadn't stated the model and year of the car. A check through your previous posts showed that most have related to the 850. Which vehicle are you trying to repair now? If you don't specify we can only guess.

Rig up a high voltage link to the mouse. He'll leave it alone after the first shock.

Standing the tank on its end may have caused the float to snag. They can move from side to side as well as up and down. It looks as though you are going to have to take the unit out after all.

My thought, after changing a fuel pump is that the float is stuck. I would suggest opening it up and taking the pump out, check the float, because by now, you have installed the tank back in the car. It is easy, and might help.

I agree about checking the float to see if it has restrictions in its movement, but, I have a question about if Volvo has an anti-leak fuel stopper in a "roll over" type accident. (I am a bit of a noob when it comes to Volvo since I have only had my 850 since March 8 2010).

Most cars have an inertia fuel cut off switch fitted to stop the fuel pump running if the car has a crash. On some cars it is possible to accidentally trip the switch as some are fitted under the passenger seat and can be tripped by sudden seat movement or by hitting a pot hole. If tripped reset by pushing button on top down. On later cars the cut off is controlled by the air bag ECU instead, so only will cut fuel if air bag is deployed. There is also a roll over switch.

By the way - Volvo did it first, again.
