850 97 Switchs on the dash don't light up.

I have several switchs from the seat heaters to the radio to the headlight switch that do not luminate. Is there a fuse that runs them all or does each switch have a bulb that needs replacing.

Each switch has a bulb that needs to be replaced. There is a very long thread about bulbs here on MVS with a lot of information - just use the search box above. You can save some $$ by buying bulbs that can be retrofitted to the bulb bases of the burned out bulbs - Radio Shack carries them if you have them in your area.

The Radio Shack part number is 272-1092 but you will need to retrofit them into the existing sockets. The first one will be a bit tough but from there on it is all cake.

Do the switches "pop" out or do I need to remove the dash pannel and center console?
Are all the switch bulbs the same size(I'm guessing yes)?
I also notice that the only light on the radio is the channel display.
Any ideas for that problem?

On our 1994 850, the switches just popped out without removing any trim, but I am not sure about a 1997 vehicle. Just a small fine bladed screw driver or pick to gently pry up on the side and top of the switch. The switch then pulls our and disconnect the plug.

The bulbs are very easy to replace and it was a good excuse for me to buy a new soldering iron. Be careful when you take the switch apart though - do it slowly and over a clean work area to avoid loosing parts. If I remember right, the switch only goes back together one way - but simple to do. After doing one, the rest are a breeze...Good luck.

EDIT: Bulbs are the same size on the 1994 850... I also soldered the new bulb wires to existing bad bulb wire stub for easier soldering.

I own a 1997 GLT and the switches can be removed by prying with a slot screwdriver on the lower (back) side of the switch.

The lamps in the '93-94 series are totally different than the later '95 and on versions. The early versions have lamps that are actually soldered into the switch assembly whereas the later versions have socketed bulbs. The same lamp fixes them all but the procedure is much different. The later versions are much easier to deal with.

All of the switches pop out of the dash the same way. Like was said, just use a small screwdriver and gentle force, from the bottom of the switch, and they will pop right out.

By the way, everyone is welcome to take a look at the following topic:
http://forums.clubvolvoquebec.com/showthread.php?t=8601
It is about replacing the bulbs with LEDs.
It is unfortunately in french, but the pix are more than explicit.
If anyone needs translation, here I am.
