S60 AWD 2002 No console, dash or door power

Post by osuinco »

Radio display lights do not work and radio controls on steering wheel do not work. Also, occassionally the dash clock runs like a banshee for a few moments before stopping. These are the "old" problems that have been annoying but not critical yet included for context.

Yesterday while driving the message "Check SRS Airbag" and "Brake Failure" (or very similar wording) came up on the message center followed by all dash power going out so no gauges, dials, illumination, nothing. Then the radio console (which worked despite previous issues) went out, then the air conditioner quit but the blower kept working. Then the door panel electronics quit.

Car still drives, and all exterior lights including headlights, signals, brakes, running lights and the sunroof work normally.

When this happens, nothing comes back on during that trip but everything comes on briefly at start up before cutting out.

A boat owner so I am REALLY adept at fixing stuff but this sounds like it is something electronic that I will probably need professional assistance. Any thoughts on things I can look at to eliminate as issues?

Thanks.

Welcome to MVS.
Yes, it probably is something electrical and require a trip to the dealer unless someone else has experienced the same and has a simple solution.

Yikes, was hoping for at least a try this, or try that response. Oh well, I took it in today anyway.

An update, but not good news. After several trips to the mechanic, the issue is still not resolved.

As with all auto problems, it never goes bad with any regularity or defining outside conditions. At one time it will go out while driving, others while at idle. Sometimes will go entire trips, other times everything blanks out the minute I leave the driveway. Drove 900 miles to KC and it did not do anything. On the way back, it blanked out two minutes after hitting the highway after every stop (used the GPS for a speedo).

Maybe related but twice in the past week a beep has sounded and "025" is displayed on the message center, only to go away and not show up again. It does not come up when recalling messages either.

Another visit to the mechanic on Tuesday. Browsing through the board again there sure seems to be a lot of electronic issues with this make in the general timeframe. Kid asked me yesterday if I would recommend a Volvo anymore and right now, I would have to say no. Very impressed early on. Lately, if there is a ridiculously expensive issue on a 7 year old car that no one can resolve....not so impressed.

Have you found out what the problem was with your "electrical problem". I'm having the exact same symptoms (other than the 025 code display) on a 2002 XC70 and am wondering if you got yours fixed.

On my 2003 xc-70 the radio light and steering wheel radio controls don't work. The clock has the same problem as well. I replaced the radio lamps with no avail, and when I asked the dealer they said I needed a new radio (for $800+). Still looking for a reasonable answer.

I found a used radio online for $65 that said it needed no codes, bought and installed it and the lights work just fine. The steering wheel controls still don't work but I think that might be a module of some type that needs replaced as well. I read about it somewhere in this forum but can't find it at the moment. If anyone knows what it is called please let me know.
