S60 2.4T (US) 2002 Upper Engine Mount Replacement

Post by seggs »

I noticed last week that the upper engine mount bushing on my S60 was cracking. This is the one that mounts at the top of the engine back towards the firewall. I have noticed quite a bit of vibration on a cold start up that would go away when the engine warmed up. I figured this bushing was probably the culprit. So, after finding the procedure on this site for changing them I ordered the part, which was supposedly the direct OEM replacement(Boge brand).
The instructions I looked at was actually for an 850, but appeared to be identical to my S60 in process(round bushing version). I chose to buy a single piece press in version rather than the 2 peice urethane version because of the negative comments about them (bad vibration)

Anyway, upon receiving the new part, it looked identical to the old part. I cut out the old bushing (which completely fell apart) and prepared to press in the new one. However, the new one actually was a bit smaller in diameter, and didnt require pressing in at all, in fact, its a little loose.
With nothing else to use, I proceded to install the new bushing.

The car seemed to run great-no vibration at all! But...am I asking for trouble in the long run? Did Volvo change the design? Are there 2 different sizes for the round version.
Thanks Much

I don't know what you bought.
Volvo is not selling the round bushing anymore, they want everyone to install the new square ones (you need to buy a new bracket).
They really do last a lot longer but whatever you bought, the OEM bushing needs to be pressed in, so you do not have the correct size
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Thanks.
That makes sense. I was wondering why it was so difficult to find this bushing. I bought mine at autopartswarehouse.com...Boge brand...appeared to be a German brand.
Does anyone know of anywhere to buy a correctly sized round version?
I'm out of work right now and just trying to do some needed work inexpensively.
