850R 96 Squeaky Squeaky

Post by Aramelli »

My father owned my 850R before me and has generously passed it down to me. My 850R is squeaking so much i can't even talk to anyone on the phone. I suspected my shocks were going back so i asked me dad if he had ever changed them and he said about two years back he had changed the rear shocks and use some really top quality gas shocks. I was looking at the top of the shocks where what i believe is called the shock mount and it was loose. I could move it in a complete circle, up and down. It is the located close to my back seats if i pull up the carpet in deep in the trunk. Can anyone confirm to me that it is the shock mount and it is indeed what is causing this horrific squeaking.

That very well could be the problem. The normal failure mode is that the rear shocks actually start to protrude from the mount but they can get loose and cause considerable "clunking". Sometimes a fender washer below the nut will cure that problem.

In relative Volvo terms the shock mounts are cheap and they are very easy to replace. If you buy new parts avoid aftermarket junk and go OEM.

Let us know what works out.

+1 on going with genuine Volvo mounts. Replaced them with aftermarket on my 94 850, and one of them blew out within a few months. The originals were fine after years- but I was replacing all suspension components. Replaced again with Volvo mounts- no more trouble. Go OEM.
