s90 1998 burnt transmission fluid

Post by steelfish »

the dreaded flshing arrow with the dreaded check engine light came on. I have not checked the codes as of yet. Just wanted to know if the burnt tranny fluid is a bigger problem than just changing the fluid will fix. my car is in the shop overnight to flush the tranny. It was running fine even though all the warning lights were on. will give update when i get my volvo back, thanks.

I have found that flushing the fluid works well when mine would get burnt. You might have to do it again though in a month or two. The fresh fluid cleans the inside of the trans and picks up varnishes which might need to be flushed again.
Replace the fluid with Mobil 1 synthetic.

Thanks Dan for you help. I got my s90 back from the shop. They took the pan off and saw nothing out of the norm. The fluid was really bad though. Dark and smelly. We didnt flush it. the filter or screen look ok too. I brought my obd11 with and read the code...p0740. I guess its the tcc with that code. I bought the obd11 for thirty bucks at harbour frieght and wanted to use it. It was the cheapest one they had. Any way if this occures again can you disconect that part and if so where is it and would that be harmfull to the rest of the tranny? I thought i read here that it would only affect the mpg. OK thanks for the help.

I have merged this post with the original thread for continuity.

Code P0740 relates to Volvo transmission code AT331 - lock-up solenoid SL short circuit to supply voltage.

The transmission control module has gone into "Emergency Mode 1". The solenoid is permanently activated and the lock-up function is permanently engaged on gears 2, 3 and 4. This may cause harsh gear shifting.

Have you given the correct code, as you can't disconnect anything to sort this one out?

Bill.
