Post by alex240dl »

i have a white 84 240dl, my overdrive isn't working, and mpg is obviously not as great on the fwy due to this...i may be not the most brilliant but i cant seem to locate it. The dealer said it should be behind the glovebox on the left, i tried looking but did not find it...can someone please please please send a diagram or a picture of where it could be....your help will be most appreciated. thanks

ps. i forgot to mention its a manual transmission as well

Yip its located behind the glove box, normaly hanging down above the passenger leg shroud that can be undone by several large fixing tabs. It should be located within a holding bracket under the glove box (experts correct me), but over time it will normally hang within the wring loom. I had a UK 244 GLT that had the same prob, I took the overdrive relay out and took it to an auto electrician. He showed me how the contacts were not working within the unit and advised me that a new one was required. the thing is that a second hand unit out of a scrap car will probably suffice due to the quality of Volvo parts. The second hand unit I installed on the car lasted until I sold the car...2 years later...so takes ya chances, 2nd hand 'aint too bad some times.

alex240dl, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The attached shows the locations of some of the relays on your car.

+1 on the relay probably dangling rather than sitting in its holder but, just in case you have the exception to the rule, you know where it should be.

thanks guys for the reply and the diagram bill...i did find a black relay, with P/N 1307064 on the top it says 896329 and manufacturers date is 26.09.1984 it sounds like the relay is a messed up, bc when i shake it, it sounds like a little piece inside is broke and makes a jingle...is this the correct relay...or should i keep searching...thanks

In my opinion, unless you ever plan on towing with your car...I would save a few bucks and do the bypass that IPD sells. Its cheaper than the solenoid and it eliminates the guess work as to what could be wrong.

I can't find that part number listed for any relay for the 1984 240. The parts list shows the overdrive relay is part number 1259750 and this is the number quoted by both FCP and IPD.

If something is loose then it is probably shot.

That would be my advice for an automatic but this is manual.

See what happens when you have A.D.D. ....skip right over some of those details that might have been important. I'll crawl back in my hole now.

I do it all the time, type an answer, reread the problem and amend the answer to fit the facts.

Your car looks very nice. In the UK we didn't have the four headlight models, just plain, vanilla, boring rectangulars. The first time I saw one with those headlights it was owned by a USAAF officer and he refused to sell it to me.
