99 c70 Coupe Mass Air Flow Sensor Removal

Post by smmaharaj »

Does anyone know what kind of special tool is required to remove the MAF from the housing?

I am following up on a string of MAF postings and suspect mine needs a good cleaning to sort out idle issues etc.

Any help or advice? I just spent half an hour at Pep Boys with a sales guy and no luck on finding the tool that fits right.

Thanks,

Sean

Do you need to remove it to clean it? MAF cleaner comes in an aerosol and is sprayed with it in situ. I haven't done it on a C70 but I have cleaned them on other Volvo models and other makes.

Yes, I am trying to remove it to clean it.

I disconnected it to see if it affected my rough idle and sure enough it is the source of my problem.

I bought the cleaner, but I could not find the right tool even at Pep Boys to remove it for the cleaning process.

Is it hard to remove because the torx has the raised 'dot' in the middle?

If so, go to AutoZone and ask for Great Neck Part Number: TQR9C. $9.99 Thats what I did.

Looks like this

Its a Star Torx Set. Also know as a 'Tamper Proof' Security Torx. If my memory is right, its T20 size. You have to buy the set, nearly impossible to find for sale individually.

If you have a really clean, good brand of pliers, you might be able to grab the outer edges of the head of the bolt and twist it out.

Also, depending on mileage, cleaning a MAF is a short term fix, IMHO.

Once you get the 2 screws holding the MAF to the filter housing out, loose the clamp on the other side. Now the MAF should turn loosely but won't come out easily. Take a flat screwdriver and pry it out from the plastic hose. I think there is a small tab on the hose that will help you getting a grip. It's not going to be pretty, but once you install it back and tighten the clamp, it all should be fine.
