1998 S70 GLT - Multiple Repairs Needed

1998 S70 GLT - Multiple Repairs Needed

I like my car (104,000 miles) a lot but all of a sudden things are starting to go wrong with it. I've given some thought to trading it in, getting what I can for it, and not doing any repairs but I'm attached to it so I'm going to bite the bullet on some repairs. I need some good advice on the following repairs. Which ones would you do first? Do the prices seem fair, etc.

-- ABS Control Unit $700
-- Right front Strut $170
-- Valve ticking off and on. Repair shop recommends removing oil pan for inspection of seal rings on oil pickup tube approx. $500
-- auto door locks won't open. You have to manually lift the lock and use key in door. No price yet as I didn't have them look at that. Any idea what that might be?

Any advice is appreciated.

look around on this site there are people who can repair the ABS module. there is also a detailed writeup on how to do it yourself. As far as the strut, replace both sides at the same time if ones bad the other isnt far behind. that price seems right (as long as the parts are included) as for your doorlocks did you try changing the fobs battery?
95 850 turbo....poly upper mount, 19t turbo, 3" downpipe, 2.25 custom exhaust w/magnaflow cat. bilstein struts/shocks,Ipd hd mounts and seats. vented cross drilled rotors F/B. and lastly an Alpine H/U,and hopefully more to come!!!

+1 Will. If you are not willing to do the ABS yourself then at least read the thread about the ABS Module repair and send it to Vic. He will fix it for $150 NOT $700. That's ridiculous. Struts need to be done at the same time so that goes up to $340. As far as the central locking, replace batteries and try it out. If that doesn't fix it then read the thread on this website about the central locking.

Thanks for the help. I read the thread that detailed the ABS module repair and it seems fairly straighforward; however, having never soldered or repaired an ABS module I'd prefer someone who know what they're doing to do the job. I thought $700 seemed high. BTW -- who is Vic?

Yes, I've changed the battery in the fobs. Even when I try to use the power unlock button on the inside of the door (the one that unlocks all doors at the same time) it doesn't unlock the doors either.

Vic Rocha I think is his name, he repairs the ABS modules. He has a website detailing how to remove the ABS module so you can send it to him to fix.

In your first post you mentioned your mileage to be around 100k and you said that everything seems to be falling apart. The 100k milestone is typically when a lot of things need to be replaced. If you keep the car long enough, you will run into a similar situation at 200k, 300k, etc... lol

The door locks are a PITA to fix, but can be done pretty easily yourself. I'm assuming you still hear the motor in the door run when you push the unlock button, right? If someone holds the handle on the door while you are unlocking it with the remote, it breaks the plastic tab in the door that connects to the motor to push the locks up and down. You'd think between all the car manufacturers out there they'd think of a better design...

Everyone else covered the ABS module.

Both front struts need to be done at the same time.

As for the oil pickup lines, before you do that, try running some Seafoam through your engine. $10 for a can, and can help with valve noise, and dramatically improve how well your car runs. 1/3 in gas tank, 1/3 in oil, and 1/3 through a vacuum hose. Search the site for 'seafoam instructions'

Uh oh...I sense a seafoam debate. I am w/ Jackblack about the seafoam...once this spring/summer comes I plan on seafoaming my engine.

No debate intended, just a warning. I wish I'd had that warning prior to doing mine. That thread should be sticky IMO.
