The AW boxes were made by Aisin-Warner, Japan, the first being the AW55 which was the BW55 made under license from Borg-Warner. The AW70 3 speed with overdrive was used in the 1985 240DL/GL and the AW71 3 speed with overdrive was used in the 1985 240GLTurbo (USA). The AW71 is a heavy duty version of the AW70.
Both boxes are good and will notch up high miles if they are serviced according to Volvo specs. On '83 - '85 models the fluid should be changed at 22,500 miles (37,500kms). Initially the service also required the transmission filter to be inspected, cleaned or replaced at the same interval but this was dropped from the service schedule in December 1990.
