The undertray is there to protect the engine from surface water being thrown up and shorting out the electrics. It also gives some protection to the bottom of the engine against other hazards on the carriageway e.g. debris.

In addition to what Bill states, now this was on my '85 240, lost the cover in early December and did not replace it, by the middle of Feb., my steering rack had developed a horrendous leak, the seal where the column attaches had blown, the cause was heavy corrosion on the shaft of the rack, which I figured was from road salt being splashed into it. Maybe it was just coincidence, but I would go with being on the safe side. Replace it, it is cheap insurance.

Have you tried Erie Vo-Vo, link at the top of the forum?

Yes, you want it. Without it you have no protection from splash/debris under the engine, but I seem to remember that your air-guide attaches to it, so without it you can't have the airguide.

I believe FCPGroton has them, and I even think that you can get the VOlvo OEM one for next to nothing - check with your local dealer (to save on shipping) or getvolvoparts.com armed with a part number.

Before you order, ensure you still have the airguide, the three screws and spacers for it (they go into the A/C condenser) and whatever other little pieces you might need.

If you've lost the front bumper lip, it's time to order that one too.
