A 850 without air bags?

I bought an imported (Dubai) 850 GLT 1993 model yesterday. Today I looked trough the user manual and noticed that the manual said that the car is equipped with SRS. It should also be a marker on my dashboard. There is none... The steering wheel also look different.

What do you guys think after looking at the picture attached? (it's not a good picture sorry!)

I have never seen such a car. It definitely doesn't have a passenger's side airbag but it may have an airbag in the steering wheel, you can't really tell from the picture.

The good news is that the dash won't curl up on the passenger's side like the rest of us have to deal with.

Try interrogating port B-5 and see if you get any readings at all.

Fascinating.

European '93 & earlier '95 models don't have airbags at passenger's side.Just drivers + side impact air bags(for driver & passenger),without passenger's side airbag.They started to install them at later '95 models.

Also i think that '93 european models should have drivers side & sips airbags,but on the wheel from the picture there is not stamped "srs".

Maybe it's from '92,not '93,but also it's not for european market....it's for Asian market.Maybe Volvo's for their market didn't had airbags in that year.

Instrument cluster in that car in the picture is from later model.'93 models have a little different instrument cluster and don't have a trip computer.

Thank you for answers. I'm sure it's a 1993 model and it has a trip computer, but the lack of air bags must be because it was bought in Dubai. That's a bummer, but I just have to live with it (or die?)

I was taking for granted my airbags in both my 850s until reading this post...Thank god we have more common sense and higher standards in North America!!!!!!!!

You probably have higher standards than the asian market, the European however...

The registration book from Dubai said that this vehicle was registered in December 1993.

I searched on pictures of Volvo 850 and found this

Doesn't he have the same dashboard as me? This car is from Latvia.
Maybe some countries didn't have it as standard?

Thank Volvo...is that the Ford guys or the former Execs from the late 90's?

I believe the car manufacturers actually are only conforming to our specs and our government requirements so that they can meet guidelines and be able to sell to such a huge quadrant of the world and make the most serious profits imaginable!!

It was reported in Volvo's pre-Ford days most the money Volvo made was in the North American markets. So do you really think they are going to test sub-standard quality on us and our governments..yeah right???

I know this because I've personally seen car manufacturers (BMW,BENZ,Totality,GM,ETC) supplying totally substandard products to third world and developing countries.

Many new cars today in these countries don't even have airbags and ABS..NO JOKE...let alone stability control ,whiplash protection, and other advanced safety features.

By the way did I mention that cars are MUCHHHHHH MOREEE expensive in these developing countries.

In Algeria for example you can not buy a brand new Toyota Yaris for less than $17,000 USD. This car will NOT have ABS, airbags, or any fancy stuff...to make matters worse build quality is substandard to say the least!!

Did you know in this same country a quarter of the postulation lives on less than 2 dollars a day!!!

So can we thank our manufacturers for taking advantage of the situations and circumstances ...or our governments for taking kickbacks from these companies in exchange for the ability to import garbage and put these terrible dangerous contraptions on the roads!!!!

THANK GOD !!!!!!...we live in a quadrant were corruption is less prevalent and guidelines and are more strict and in some cases followed above and beyond!!!

I hope I didn't go outside the purpose of this forum!!!

The reason why Volvo did not have passenger side airbag as standard equipment in the Nordic markets was that we use rear-facing Child seats up to the age of 4-5 years. And many parents prefer to have the child in the front seat while driving. As a result, infant fatalties is almost none exsistent in scandinavia. A on/ off function is of course the best optiont. However, wearing the seatbelt, it is the driver side airbag, preventing impacting the steering weelthat, improves safety substantialy, passenger side only by a few percent.
