 Nothing personal for me. My Dad had an F-150 that got 5 MPG better than my Uncles identical truck on the highway, my Uncle sold his. Variations do occur and I do what I can to attain the best possible as well. 220,000 KM I am willing to experiment now!

I'm so with you there. Cars have advanced in almost every way over the years, except fuel economy. Our volvos are relatively light by comparison to today's cars. A new front wheel drive V70 weighs 3900 lb empty. Why?

I'm thinking I should add something...when I said I get 33mpg that's only highway, it's not my combined MPG.

in the 850, I drive fairly common routes, I work from home but go the the airport almost every week which is 100 miles each way and through a canyon that gains and loses about 1000 vertical feet. And I have just about every gas receipts for the last 5 years in the ash tray with the MPG on them...

I consistently fill up with an average of 29MPG. I would say that is about 75% highway (CC set at 70-80 on highway/60 through canyon, air on in the summer) and 25% light city (small town with 3-4 miles of 40 MPH in between me and town. I and dying to get 500 miles on one tank, I usually get to 450 or so before I get nervous about being in that canyon with no gas...

When my wife was the primary driver she got more like 350 per fill up and it was 100% city. And I have a lighter foot.

In the XC90, the best avg I ever got was on a 150 mile stretch from home on my way to Vegas, mostly highway, averaged 27.6 according to the dash. on a 1,000 mile trip mixed with City/highway/national park driving I average 23.5 with 6 passengers (4 adults, 2 kids). We usually get 16-18 city, 22-25 highway. But I have noticed that when I reset the computer at fill ups it is always about 1-1.5 MPG less than my actual fill up.
