Yes, #5 in the swedishautoparts picture is the spring seat and #7 is the strut mount. The strut mount is basically a bearing and the top of the spring seat fits up into it.
The FCP Groton page above shows an aftermarket parts set. Lots of people have advised against getting aftermarket, especially ScanTech. FCPG also sells the OEM parts; this is the OEM spring seat. http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/p ... ory_id/185
I don't know the answer for sure as to whether the 2003 XC90 spring seat fits (I think it does), but Ozark Lee can probably answer.

Any year XC-90 (OEM) will fit and work fine on the 850 / 70 series cars.
If you buy anything that says aftermarket you are playing with fire unless you just enjoy replacing the parts.
It is your choice.

Sorry, didn't pay attention to the one I posted...definitely go with OEM.
Not sure on real labor. It took me about 3 hours on the first side with a really cheesy spring compressor, and about 1 hour on the other side.

Hello,
We have a 1998 Volvo S70 T5. The front left side has all of the signs of needing the spring seat replaced. When you push on the front left side it is very squeaky, and when driving and making turns you hear the same, however when driving straight you don't hear it. My question is how difficult is this job? And if just my front left is squeaky can I just replace those or should I do both sides? Also I read you might as well replace the strut mount while your there, is that necessary?
And lastly, do the XC90 spring seat part for sure work for the '98 S70? Why wouldn't you just get the part for the '98? I thank you very much for your help, am really hoping this is something I will be able to do!
Thanks!
Joe

Welcome to MVS,
There are a bunch of things that can squeak in the suspension - Spring seats, strut mounts, struts, control arm bushings, and sway bar bushings all come to mind.
The real test on the spring seat is to grab the big inverted castle washer on the top of the strut and try to twist it, you can even use a wrench but don't get carried away.
The top of the strut shouldn't turn easily and it should turn more than a few degrees either way. If it does turn easily then the spring seat is indeed shot.
I think all Volvo sells now through the parts department are the XC90 spring seats, the aftermarket guys may still have a distinction but it is a distinction without a difference since anything but OEM or IPD Heavy Duty seats are going to crap out again quickly anyway.

I brought in my own parts and was charged $50.00 a side but they were also doing my timing belt etc. Strut has to come out and be compressed to swap in the new parts. 50~75 each, let them do it.
