XC90 2006 Key won't turn in the ignition

Post by jerdar »

I got in my car the other day and when I put the key into the ignition, it wouldn't turn the whole way. It wouln't go past the 1st setting. Also when I looked under the hood, I could hear a small ringing sound. The car is fully in park and the stearing wheel is not locked. Has anyone come across the problem? Is there something I can do myself before I get it towed to the mechanics. (we live in Germany...maintenace is expensive)

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Strangely enough the post immediately before yours asked the same question about a 2004. You can read it here.

Maybe if you know the right people in Germany they can make you a new coded lock cylinder, and bypass the 7-10 day wait. 8)

(All Volvo coded cylinders come from Germany)

Thanks for your replies. I finally got my car to the service station and they discovered it was a broken lock cylinder. Thankfully they will be able to replace it fairly quickly, 2-3 days. They said it was a "special" part...and when they say "special", they mean expensive. :-) I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.
