V70 1997 AC Clicking noise from behind dash

Post by davecawsey »

Hi, Any pointers on a rapid 'clicking noise' from behind the dash, near radio on drivers side, sounds like a relay or soleniod clicking, not the radio, stops when the AC is turned off ?

Well, just a first guess, but you might check to see if there is a leaf or something in the fan box like a leaf or paper (the same noise a baseball card would make in the bicycle wheel's spokes).

Your description makes me think it is the AC system cycling on and off. When I drove to Florida this past summer the AC was clicking on and off repeatedly. My guess is that when I recharged it I didn't add enough coolant to the system so it couldn't stay on even though it was trying to. When I turned off the AC the clicking went away too.

+1

I would check your freon level in the AC system. It sounds like it is low and causing the system to click on and off.

My bet is a damper motor that has a broken gear or a split shaft on the damper flap but I know very little about the V/S series cars and it may be completely different than the 850s.

+1 on the damper motor. You said RAPID clicking noise, even if the freon is low, it still won't cycle more than every 10 seconds or so. Mine used to clunk in the summer when I'd put it in the floor/vent position. It's since gone away and works fine to my knowledge, but I suspected it was a damper motor that got stuck, gave up trying, and then tried again a few minutes later. Do you ever have any flashing climate control lights?

Many thanks for all the comments, it was the damper motor, pulled it out cleaned it up (there was a load of gunk from the gears over the contacts and tracks on the small circuit board) and it all works fine and dandy - Cheers for the help and guidence :D

My S70 has the clicking noise you mentioned above. Your advice about the damper motor above seems right on target. Does anyone have a diagram that shows me how to get to it? I am on a budget and can use any help.

Thanks!
