Does anybody have an opinion on these cars?
The story: My Father in-law came to visit my wife and I this summer in the States and loved our 2 Volvo's! I have a 1991 740 Wagon and a 1993 850 GLT, both very clean for their age, etc..
Anyway, now we're in Brasil visiting him and he wants to buy a used V40 and I don't much about these cars. Did a little research and found out they're half and half (Mitsubishi/Volvo) and built in the Netherlands, but that's about it.
What should I be looking for?
The service tag say the Timing Belt was replaced @ 102,000 (assuming km) in August 2005.
The car reads 73,000 km, that in itself made me a little suspicious.
From my experience the Dealer puts the repair tag on at the time of the repair. The salesman here is trying to give me the run around on it, etc...
Finally, because I feel like I'm rambling, the salesman said it was AWD. Did they make an AWD model in 2000?
Thanks for any and all opinions.
V40 2000 Pros and Cons?
Are you saying you see evidence of an odometer rollback? I'd run away.
AWD wasn't available until 2005.
What exactly does your father-in-law like about your Volvos? The 850 and 740 were still "all Volvo", but otherwise pretty different from each other, and neither seem to share much with a 2000 V40 other than the Volvo nameplate.

Not sure about the rollback, but I know what a car with 43K miles looks like and this ain't it! Plus the timing belt sticker, etc.
Not beginning to compare the 3 models, but he likes the reliability factor, styling and the fact they're fairly user friendly.
I would not buy this car, especially here in Brasil, but he really likes it. I was looking for the pros and cons of this particular model. I know each one has them. I'd like to scare him away if they have certain repairs that they're prone to, etc.

if the descrepency in the timing belt and current mileage doesnt ring alarm bells for him, then nothing will.
tell him your thoughts on the car, as to buy or not, then say "the final decision in his", and walk away...
Dont get caught in one persons emotional response to a peice of metal.
