1995 850 T-5r

Hello and Merry Christmas!
My 850 recently has lost a lot of power on accelleration but otherwise seems to start and run fine. I no longer can hear the turbo spooling up, so I assumed that the issue was there.
Yesterday, I replaced the engine mounts (the top one was completely gone, and the "front" one was bottoming out.)
Anyway, while I was in there I began troubleshooting the turbo. What I found was the hose that feeds the throttlebody and MAF(?) was torn pretty badly. In fact the small hose was barely on.
Because of this I decided to pull the rest of the hoses and inspect/replace as needed. The rest seem to be in good shape, but I found 2 rather disturbing things: the lower hose that goes into the bottom of the intercooler was full of oil- not a little bit but probably a cup or so.
Also some of the oil that was lining the other hoses had some metal shavings in it.
I'm assuming that 1 there shouldn't be oil in there, and 2 there shouldn't be metal shavings either.
The top end was rebuilt about a year ago FYI- I had burned an intake valve and had them all replaced.

So, I'm thinking that this indicates that the turbo is shot and needs rebuilt or replaced?

I did some hunting online and found a few ebay sites selling kits, but there appear to be 2 different types? "flat back" and "Supper back?"

can someone help me identify what I have? also it seems like the kits are in the $120 range, does that seem normal? if anyone knows of a better price or dealer please let me know!

I appreciate any help!

Have a great day and a wonderful holiday!
:D

Reach in there from the top and poke the fins of the turbo with your finger - they should spin pretty freely. If it's seized, or doesn't spin very freely, you're looking in the right direction with a rebuild kit!

A bit of oil is normal over time, especially with a car that old. But it's also possible you may have a bad wastegate or turbo control valve before you go about rebuilding it.

Merry Christmas

Thanks! I'll check that when I get back to it on monday. Does anyone have a picture of the Wastegate or control valve so I know where to look?

Thanks again!

You can see the wastegate actuator outside of the heat shield at the back of the engine bay, but you can only see the arm and its connection to the turbocharger itself if you remove that shield.

This topic has a good picture of it. Hope this helps!

The video is great. does anyone know where i could find the spec to set my waste gate on my 95 850 2.3 turbo? They set the one in the video at 4psi. I thought i read somewhere in one of the forums to set it at 6psi. Not sure, but i did check to see where it lines up at 4 and 6 psi. The rod doesn't line up with either. Hope everyone had a happy holidays, thanks.

I have a 5254T.
As far a s i understand... this is a low pressure turbo.
Does this work the same way?
There is no boost guage so I am assuming that it does not. And... there is no adjustment on the wastegate.

I am new to the turbo and I have no manual for the car as of yet.

xc models and i believe awd models have low pressure turbos. The regulator/waste gate is adjustable, according to the video on youtube by ipd. It's posted in this forum above. just click on it if you haven;t already. No boost guage? interesting. I'm not sure at all about that one. Hopefully someone with some knowledge on here can help us both out.

None of the 98+ cars have boost gauges, unfortunately. I don't know why they took them out.

Yours is indeed a LPT, but it's adjustable in exactly the same way as the bigger ones. Just don't turn up the wastegate too much or you'll just screech tires from a stop
