'99 S70 starts, immediately stalls, repeat (SOLVED)

Post by rainman14624 »

My daughter's '99 normally aspirated S70 has developed an annoying problem of starting and stalling mostly when cold. It may take a half-dozen start-stalls before the engine will remain running. I cleaned the MAF sensor the other day and the problem disappeared for a couple of days but has returned. I'm wondering if these symptoms indicate a bad MAF sensor, coolant temperature sensor or faulty IAC valve.

Welcome to MVS,

Is the check engine light on and have you scanned for OBD-II codes? Codes can give us something to work with other than just guessing.

I'm sorry for leaving that information out. No CELs, which has me baffled.

The 850s can have this problem with the fuel pump relay especially when cold out. I don't know if the s70 has the exact same setup, but I would be surpised if it didn't. I eventually took the relay out and took it inside the keep it at room temp. I put it in on a cold morning when it would usually not start. It worked fine. I replaced the relay, and never had the problem again. Search for fuel pump relay, and it is located under the hood, under the fuse panel. There is a particular number on it to ID it but I cannot recall.

Relay 103 is the fuel pump relay. That is a problem that won't set a CEL but the car won't run. You can use a paper clip to jumper between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the relay to bypass it. If the car starts and runs with the jumper that was your problem and you can either replace the relay (around $50.00 I think) or repair it (around $3.00 worth of Radio Shack parts).

Not sure if you already have this sorted but my 99 V70 did this when the ETM was all but dead on my car. Would also stall out the car once it was up and going too though so possibly a little different. Was only around 0 Degrees C too.

Update: Took the intake hose off and sprayed the MAF sensor and IAC down very well with electronic contact cleaner. Couldn't figure out how to take the IAC, which is high on the intake hose in the NA engine, off with those five-pronged screw heads. Anyway, I cleaned the IAC as best I could and reassembled. When I cranked it, it sputtered for a few seconds and then came to life. The start-stall, start-stall hasn't returned. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Recently, I've been experiencing the same issues w/ my volvo 850 T5. I only drive the car on average 30 miles a day. Recently, the engine would cut off while at a stop in traffic. No CELs or warning lights showing on the instrument cluster. However, it appears the "up" arrow would very briefly go on before the the engine shuts down. So far I can restart the car immediately. I scanned the car using the OBD II connector and found no codes. I've been told that no codes would show up when there is no light or "check engine" light showing on the instrument cluster. Based on what I've read in this forum, the fuel pump relay might be the culprit.

Ozark - Can you enlighten us on the $3 radioshack repair method of the fuel pump relay? Is this fix or a standard part replace an easy process?

rainman - what's an IAC? i replaced my fuel pump relay. it seems to be idling better now and i've not experienced the engine to stall lately. however, i'm more sensitive about this car now. my wife drove the car a few days ago, and she has complained that the car almost died on her while she was driving it.
