Catalytic converter removal

Post by IVIUSTANG »

Hey guys,

As some of you may know most of Canada does not have emissions testing. As a result I am thinking of hollowing out my cat and running an O2 simulator on my rear O2 sensor. Are the performance or economy gains worth the work involved? Air quality is not a concern where I live(1.67 people per square KM). Consider this for interests sake. Am I much better off just upgrading the whole exhaust system or will eliminating any back pressure at the cat help significantly?

Thanks,

- Jesse

I'm not sure about the effects on a newer car, but since our 1974 BMW does not have to pass emissions tests, we removed the catalytic converter. It had noticeably more power than the same model '76 (with a converter) when we had them both running at the same time. My parents actually raced each other in the two, and the 74 won hands-down every time. This is out of a 100-hp, 2-liter 4-cylinder carburated engine, so I can only imagine the effects it would have with a bigger engine

Your gas mileage will probably improve as well.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
