What's your gas mileage?

Post by ADK46R »

Just got my first Volvo about a month ago - a 1998 S70 w/ 132K on it. So far the car has been great - starts instantly - even at 25 below zero - great snow car (w/ 4 hakkepalita nokian snows), idles, runs well, good acceleration etc. But my gas mileage has been disappointing - I'm getting about 12-13mpg around town and maybe 18 on the highway. No long trips taken yet, so the "highway" milage has been just on the local roads at @ 45-60mph.
So, is this typical of this model or what? What do you get on your S70?

Hi. I just got my first Volvo last month. Mine is a 1999 V70XC (AWD, Turbo) with 146k miles on it. I too was quite disappointed with the gas mileage. Overall the car runs well and it seems well maintained. I am getting about 16 on average city and 21.6 highway. If I reset the average right after accelerating to 65mph on the freeway and measuring PURE freeway driving, it will go up to 25 or so. I had been hoping for an overall average of about 25 since I do almost entirely highway driving. I think the FWD Volvos do a little better than the AWDs, but I really like the competent way my AWD handles the snow.

Good luck and welcome to this forum. I have found it to be an amazing resource.

1998 S70 T5, 600+ KM per tank city, 800-1100 KM highway driving. Which from what I have read around here is at the top of the spectrum for fuel economy. I can get just over 40 MPG imperial highway. So easily over 30 US MPG.

@ADK46R,
And I thought my mileage was bad! 17 city, 22-24 highway in my '98; 19 city, 25 highway in the '97.

My '98 is running somewhat rich, I can smell it in my exhaust. You are definitely not getting the mileage you should! Time for a "Stage 0" tune-up!
'98 S70 n/a with 187k miles, paid $300 for it!
'97 850 n/a wagon, girlfriend's cruiser!

Is it a turbo?

Cold starts at low temps and short trips will murder your fuel economy. Wait for summer.

I get 21 mpg in town and 28 mpg on the road (driving steady 70 mph to an from work each day - 80 miles roundtrip). My wife gets 19 mpg in town with an aggressively firm foot.
I changed the spark plugs (Bosch multi prong), oxygen sensor (denso from Autohaus in Az) for 1/2 price and the ignition coils (Bosch - same as original) at 199K. I change the oil at 7,500 mile intervals per the book, keep the tires at 32 psi, change air filter, etc. per book. I try to only use Volvo parts except for wiper blades. Kumho tires (60k miles) are lasting longer than the Michelins (45k miles) at less than half the price.

omg 7,500 mile oil changes, I may throw up, it must look like diesel soot oil. it will never make it to 300K if you dont change the oil more often. I really hope your not doing this on dino oil. Is it a turbo? my 94 Turbo gets 24-26 city highway combined. with all mods in my sig.
