C70 2004 Starts, revs and shuts off sportically

Post by grydloc »

Every now and then... and occurring more often... my C70 with 89,000 miles will start, rev to 3 or 4 thousand RPM and then just shut off when I let off the gas. Then it takes a number of tries to restart with a lot of just turning over. We live in the Washington, DC area and this occurs in both cold and warm weather. Bought the car at 40000 miles and to my knowledge, none of the fuel line components have ever been replaced, ie. fuel pump, filter, etc. Sometimes it will start fine, I will drive it to work or the store and when I try to restart after 10 - 15 or more minutes it just cuts off. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Grydloc, how are the basics: spark plugs, air filter, fuel economy? Any messages on the message display?

Air filter is good and fuel economy is about what I would expect... around 25mpg. I am not sure about the plugs, but no messages being displayed.

You're going to have to dig a little on this. If you can do this, see what you get. I don't know if that will work on your car, or even if you can rely on the results. But there it is FWIW.

Next step would be taking the car in to find out what codes are stored.

Or

Run a can of Seafoam through her and see if the problem persists.

same thing happened to my 04 C70. I wait several seconds and move the steering wheel back and forth then it starts. this works on a regular basis. the local dealer was familiar with the problem but never resolved it permanently. most be something in the steering column related to the ingintion???

It might be the fuel pump thats not operating properly.

I used to have problems starting the car, as the sometimes the start motor would crank but the engine won't fire. This was solved by replacing the ignition switch.
