XC70 Relay chatter front right door, no window door temp.

Post by Eldad »

XC70 2001, 99K miles.
Suddenly there is a relay clicking (chatter) from RH front door, right front door lock and window not working, ambient temp. indicator shows "--F".
The relay clicking continues even when the key is at off or out. It stops ONLY when fuse 27 (doors) on the driver side fuse box is pulled out.
Am a savvy well equipped electronics tech., what to do?
Anybody had this problem?

I looked through the last 20 pages of the forum, took a long time..... Would be great if there was a search function for key words on the forum, am new here, - am I missing it?
Thanks for any help.

Hello Eldad, One fellow posted that he found a connection in his RF door which wasn't completely plugged and locked. If you hear a clicking, removing the door panel to inspect is your next step. Please post back and tell us what you learned. Kira

Hello Georgeandkira,
Tried to tap and rattle the doors to see if anything would change but it did not. Only way to stop the relay constant chatter is to remove fuse 27 which disables also the windows and door locks. I am not too comfortable with removing the door panel (I don't know if it makes a difference but mine is leather interior), am afraid of breaking the little plastic fastening pins that hold the panel. Is there a way to do it that does not endanger them while removing or replacing? and should I order new ones before I start? any tips about that?
Thanks, Eldad

I would recommend reading through the post: "Volvo S60 AWD 2002 Driver's side power window switch". Your issue sounds exactly like the one I had except mine was on the LH (driver's) side.

A few thoughts:
The previously stated post describes removing the door panel...dont be afraid of it, its probably the easiest than any other I have ever removed. I had it down to about a 5 minute job. The pins are very easy to remove and re-usable.

Check fuse #36...its specific to the RH module.

Was the outside temp gage working prior to removing fuse #27? I noticed that it worked when #27 was in but not when out. Your right, taking #27 out is the only way to stop the clicking but then you lose all the other functions.

The post has all the info I learned fixing mine.
Good luck!

Hello SEGGS,
Thank you for your good comments, they help to make me more confident about removing the door panel.
I could not find the conversation about the S60 that you suggested, can you please post the URL to it?
The temperature indicator did not work once the chattering started (shows "--F"), whether fuse 27 is in or out.

Plug the address below into your browser and it should get you there. There is alot of discussion about reprogramming the new module but I was able to avoid it.
My outside temp display worked when the fuse was in, so I'm not sure what that means regarding your problem...may just be the difference between what the RH and LH module does. I really dont understand why the temp would be connected to the door modules anyway!

The side mirrors each have a temperature sensor in the bottom of the mirror. Both need to be working for the temp to display in the instrument cluster. A thin film of road grime will interfere with proper function. I have pulled both mirrors and used a Q-tip with alcohol to clean the sensor surface to restore functionality.

As to the relay clicking - first step is to pull the door panel and put some eyeballs on it. As said before, maybe its just a loose connection.
