Volvo 240 DL Sedan 1986 engine quits when placed into Gear?

Car just back from mechanic where the engine mounts and transmission mount were replaced. Car driven for 2+ hours the suddenly the engine idles rough and sputters. When placed into a gear forward and reverse the engine dies?
Does any one know what the cause of this might be?

Rather a coincidence when you have had a job done to find another fault so soon. It is possible that the mechanic has accidentally moved a lead to one of the sensors whilst doing the mounts.

As your engine is idling badly the extra strain of putting it into gear will cause it to cut out. Check all the connectors for the sensors, paying special attention to the air mass meter, for good connection. Also check all of the earth (ground) leads on the engine.
