Post by DaveG »

Aside from the oft-linked "how to buy a used Volvo" (thanks, Matt!), what else particular to this model to look for?

http://allentown.craigslist.org/cto/1563436161.html (sale by owner, not dealer)
2000 Volvo S40, Silver on grey interior, 1.9L turbo engine, Great gas mileage 21 MPG, 76900 highway miles, Automatic transmission, Leather seats, Sunroof / Moonroof
2 sets of key with remote, Traction Control, power windows, power locks/mirrors, Trip computer shows you outside temperature,fuel range.
Great car,runs great,looks like new inside and out. Totally clean CARFAX history.
I am the 2nd owner on this car.
Asking price - $4500 (OBO)

From my experiences s40's have the least amount of issues. The exhaust manifold bolts like to loosen up and cause a loud noise on cold starts and there was a recall on the brakepump assemblies but not much to speak of other than that..Some had annoying steering column noise issues that were fixed with a surenge and some grease.

Thanks. kbb.com indicates $3300 for "excellent" condition.

VERY mixed reviews at edmunds

Was this model really built by Mitsubishi? :shock:

This kind of comment scares the bejeezus out of me;
One thing after another. I have had the care for 2 years, and have spent over $3000 on repairs. Every time I think I'm done, something else comes up. Like everyone else, the headlights burn out fast.

A review from a friend. Not the same model, but now i'm leery of even buying a Volvo at all! I cannot afford $500-$1000 repair bills a few times a year.

I had a 2001 Cross Country AWD. I spent close to $9000 on repairs...in FOUR YEARS OF OWNING IT! I did all required maintenance: Oil, Transmission, Fluids, Tires, ect. The Transmission blew at 80,000 miles: $4000, The stupid tires would not stay balanced. Throttle Box Assembly: $2500, I'm not even going to go on... TOO PISSED THINKING ABOUT IT... GET A TOYOTA OR HONDA, AND DON'T LET WHAT IS IN THE NEWS ABOUT THE TOYOTA RECALL NOW SWAY YOU.

ok. calmed down now. I bought a used 05 Tacoma Double Cab Off Road. I don't have to worry about breaking down anymore, just put Oil and Gas in and that's it. I'm not saying ALL Volvos are shite, but TOO many friends that had one will NEVER GET ONE AGAIN, myself included. Just research dependability for the particular model you are interested in VERY CAREFULLY. sorry about the rant... good luck.
