440 1995 Q: Speaker size

Post by Skinkehunden »

This is more of a question rather than a problem.

My 440 has original Volvo speakers installed in the front and a couple of Philips speakers in the rear. I've only had the car for a couple of days now, and I was starting to think about my 440 summer-project. I think it would be upgrading the stereo to something better. Now I've been looking in my Haynes manual and to my surprise I found out that some high spec'ed 440 came with a 6-speaker configuration.

So here's my questions:

1. Does anyone have any further info on this 6-speaker configuration?
2. The rear speaker size is Ø 130mm, but what about the front?

We, here in the states, don't have that model available to us. I'm guessing that's why you're not hearing any response.

Skinkehunden, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

We here in the UK do have that model.

The major drawback to putting in the 6 speaker system is speakers 5 an 6 are tweeters mounted in the windscreen pillars. Some of the technical papers say it is very difficult to get them in without removing the windscreen.

As to the front speaker sizes, I haven't yet found a size but looking at parts lists they are slightly smaller than the rear.

Bill: Ahhh, I wondered where the fifth and sixth speakers went :)
Regarding the front-speaker size, I found the answer myself late last night and the answer is 130mm (same as the rear) at least for the '94 models and onwards.

By any chance do you know who manufactures the original speakers?

I also found out late last night that they are 130mm. They look smaller in the diagram I have.

For the six speaker set-up, Blaupunkt. For the other set-up, I can't find that yet but am still looking.

Hey! I want to fit some new speakers onto my 440 from 91 but I'm afraid that if I don't get the size right, fitting them is going to become a complex job.
I saw that from 94 onwards the speakers are 130mm both in the front and in the rear.
Anyone has any idea if older versions speakers are the same size?
I know this is an old posr but let's hope someone sees this!
