A loud clanking noise from front end of volvo is driving me crazy. I am a new owner of a used car and am afraid I have a lemon. The sound gets faster when driving. It usually begins when turning.

Welcome to MVS.

Your problem could be in several different places but it largely depends on the noise itself. From your initial description I an leaning toward the wheel bearing hub since it increases along with the vehicle speed and gets more pronounced when turning. Normally if you are turning left and the noise increases it is the right hub and vice versa. Wheel bearings though don't normally clank, they roar and you can feel the vibration in the cabin.

Bad CV joints could also cause the problem but the clacking that they make is more pronounced at low speeds when making a tight turn.

Lastly it could be a bad spring seat but that will clunk with bumps in the road an it too tends to be more of a low speed issue.

Check the drive shaft. The awd drive shaft is a notorious trouble maker that is commonly over looked.

I've never heard a wheel bearing make a "clanking" noise on a volvo. They make a loud humming noise which is similar to what tires do when they have excessive "cupping" due to a bad alignment...I have heard dozens on sway bar end links clank and strut hats clank..These are both ties into the steering components so turning the wheel can effect these items..I've also come across struts that can "clank" if worn badly.
