850 turbo 96 camshaft mix up !

Post by Zeff »

Hello all my smart Volvo owners. My name is Zeff. Newbie to this
sort of forum... from Boston, Ma.
I've been on here for hours, don't know if i'm even doing this correctly,
so, don't get pissed to much ! Redirect if you like, if i'm doing this wrong.
....anyway i've had the camshafts out of my 96 850 turbo....
while on my work bench, someone moved them...
...can someone tell me how to cure the switch-a-roo-blues, so i can install
them correctly !?
Thank you so much...hope to contribute in the future.
Sid

Welcome to MVS,

You posted just fine.

The cams should have part numbers stamped into one end or the other. If you can post up the numbers we can look them up to see which is which. Obviously, don't put them back in until you figure out which is which. We also have a few writeups in the database that have pictures of properly positioned cams that might give you a clue as to which is which.

Welcome to the Forum. Who messed with the cams? Whoever it was, you may want to tell them not to touch anything.

As for which is which, just post up the numbers. We have you covered.

I don't know if this is consistant on all cams but my intake had a slight drill mark on the face of gear end. It might be there to balance the shaft or it might be for identification. I don't know for sure.

Hello volvo techs,
I posted the #s last night that were found on the camshafts.
I don't see it this morning, so here they are again !

....each camshaft shows, 2 sets of #s and symbols

....so lets call one, camshaft A : these #s and symbols are spread out
in between the lobes and journals. The way they post here it looks like
they #s are all together, but they are not.
.... LY, ( 13 ), (14), (36)
....rotate camshaft A until you see :
....( 2 ), ( 5 ), ( tiny triangle ), (6)

...lets call the second, camshaft B :
....(tiny triangle), (100), (15)
(1436)
....rotate camshaft B until you see :
...( 27) (01 ) (15)

....and there we have it, all the markings on camshafts that
" got switch-a-roo'd ! "
...what if i measured the lobes ? Would that indicate Int. / Exh. ?

Those numbers don't really mean much. Did you look on the ends?

Hi OZ, thanks for the returns.

Yeah, i looked, but i check again. from what i say before, it
was just the small 3 hole mounting flange and a drill hole in the center.

Check the other end of the cam shafts. Those are the ends with the slots. There should be numbers etched onto the surface.

If you know they have been mixed up mark one with something like copy fluid run the car if it runs really badly swap the cams over that will cure it there is only two combinations for them, if you have the inlet in the exhaust and vice versa the valves wont open as they did it wont cause damage just bad running

At least it's not catastrophic
