2002 VOLVO S80 T6 TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 VOLVO S80 T6 TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

Post by ELIZZY40 »

I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN OCTOBER 2008 WITH A 30 DAY WARRANTY. MY CAR STARTED SURGING AND HESITATING WHEN I ACCELERATE. HAD THE DEALER CHECK FOR EMS RECALL AND SAID NO CODES CAME UP AND THAT IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION, METAL IN TRANS. FLUID. DEALER SUGGESTED NEW TRANSMISSION. MY CAR ONLY HAS 79,000 MILES ON IT. ANYONE ELSE HAVE A SIMILAR SITUATION. IN THE MEANTIME I HAVE MADE A COMPLAINT WITH HHTSA FOR A DEFECT INVESTIGATION. IF ANY OF YOU ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS GO TO SAFEERCAR.GOV AND MAKE A COMPLAINT. IF THERE ARE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS THEY CAN ISSUE A RECALL ON FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS.

I wish this was posted 6 months ago as my transmission selector gave up the ghost. It needed a full strip and replaced which cost me over £1k to fix.
It struggled to select 4th in auto mode.
Works fine now!
Not sure if this applies to UK spec motors :(

Oh! It had only done 56k miles

You might want to flush the transmission and change the filter. There is a guide in the repair database.

Just replaced the cv joints...saved lots of money!
However, after driving it a few miles the transmission service urgent came up again!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Not pleased at all.
I am wondering if there is a connection with the abs/cv joints and the warning light.
I will post all the parts that where replaced last year as soon as i get them emailed to me.
Apparently everything that could be replaced was when it was done last year. The mechanic said he stripped the gearbox three times. And on the third one was when he changed everything.
Will post up the list

The transmission in my Volvo S80 Died one day after 165,000 service. The car stopped. Had it towed for $1000.00 back to dealer. Bottom line - there is a GM transmission in the Volvo S80 turbo! Had I known this I never would have bought this care. We have had Volvos since 1984. They had a lifespan of 25 years. Now - it's 8 years. I am looking into what action I will take. Apparently this was a KNOWN problem since Day one, however, they have never mentioned it. (the service guy told me this yesterday). They want me to buy a new Volvo - but that is NOT going to happen after, I feel, the lied by omission by NOT telling me my car had a BM transmission. I didn't buy American because I think American car transmissions aren't good. Now I find out I have one! I am upset and my 26 year love affair with the Volvo is OVER. The service buys can no longer diagnos this car and it's a real shame.

I wish all of you good luck. I am getting a used transmission ( 90 day warranty), but I will buy a new car in 3 months, but it won't be a Volvo!

Hello, Sorry to hear about you trannie problem. I thought the 2002s had the AW 5 speed transmission from Japan-very expensive to repair/replace. You say it's a GM transmission. At least it's cheaper to rebuild than an AW. PM me if you'd like the name of my trannie guy. He's honest-I've known him over 20 years and 5 drivetrains- and pretty close to you. Kira
