Nitrogen filled tyres good or bad

Post by charlyW »

When I get a new set of Continental Eco Contact Tyres on my T-5 I have been offered Nitrogen fill instead of air anyone know if this is worth the extra £10 a set?

IMO it's not worth it. Air is 79% nitrogen anyway.

What he above said...........
Another way to part a fool and his money.

Dry air contains roughly (by volume) 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1%.

Thanks for the replies. In short the Nitrogen fill [pure Nitrogen] is just a gimmik even though the company says it will allow the tyre to last longer, keep the pressure more even.

Lol I'll say you said I am to offer £2. After research I'm still divided, I understand how Nitrogen is good in very high speed racing like F1 and possibly Nascar, not really convinced on what tyre companies claim where Nitrogen slows tyre wear, does seep from the pores in rubber [is Nitrogen special as my science says all gases will leak at about the same rate] not convinced on the claim that when nitrogen in a tyre gets warm unlike air it wont increase the tyre pressure again science is against that one, finally the weight factor 32lbsqin of Nitrogen weighs in at a 3rd less than compressed O2 [ok its not pure O2 its just who knows] On the plus side I have seen the Nitrogen filling equipment and its not scavanged Nitrogen but pure BOC [leading gas supplier here in the UK] so theres got to be some good in it.

I'm on the fence think ill try it this once as I've got the Nitrogen down to free [my best price] for buying 5 continentals @£110 each

Will keep you updated on how it goes

Costco fills my tires with it for free. Honestly, I have no idea if it makes any difference or not. My gas mileage still leaves much to be desired.

It all comes down to heat and humidity.

Air compressors, by their very nature, tend to add moisture to the compressed air. As the humid air increases in temperature it will expand more rapidly than an inert gas like Nitrogen. I charge the transmission lines on most of my client radio and television stations with nitrogen since the inner conductors on the transmission lines get quite warm under full power. Some I charge with Freon but those are the gamblers that figure that the expensive gas will let them save money on the initial expense of a larger sized coax or waveguide. When that expense gets calculated over 1,000' to 2,000' it may or may not make sense but I am only employed to render an opinion. They can use my suggestion or not.

Does it matter on tires? I don't know but the guys I buy tires from (Shore Tire) do it for free and it doesn't hut anything..

Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules and have less tendency to escape past rubber molecules in the tire. SO pressure remains a little higher longer. But the effect is minuscule since fresh air is about 80% nitrogen, anyway.
