I found what is causing my noise. The brake pad is moving around a little bit and causing it to rattle. Looks like I am going to need new brake pads sooner then later.

Do you have the springs on correctly?

My car has the Brembo Calipers and yes, it does have the retaining clip. The pad is worn down to much so the metal piece behind the pad that the pistons press against is rattling when the brake is not pushed. New pads and rotors are on there way.

Alrighty, took it to the mechanic and he said it was a wheel bearing and there are some other problems wrong with the suspension.

Do these quotes sound right?

That's in Australian dollars, so in USD it's probably 525, 50, 460 or thereabouts.

Don't suppose any of them can be done myself?

edit: Any idea if these are volvo specialities or if any suspension guy can do them?

They're all typical wear items (well, except the wheel bearing...but those go bad too). Those can be done by any suspension and tire shop...and those quotes are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. I'd suggest getting some other quotes if you can.

Cool, the rattling sound is also gone. It was actually a loose brake hose!

We'll get the other bits fixed at a suspension place then. What prices would be acceptable?

I do most of that stuff myself, so I'm afraid I can't give you any direct prices. You could try http://repairpal.com/ and put in a few US Zip codes (you can even use mine - 24060) and get some estimates for your car.

They charged about $250 about 5 years ago to put a wheel bearing on my old Accord...I can only imagine that's gone up, but 500 is way over the top. I should think you'd be expect to be paying maybe a little over half of what they quoted you for.

Control arm bushings are a cinch to replace...they just have to be pressed into the arm.

And the spring seats are a bit of a bear to replace, but it only took me about 45 minutes to do one side once I set to it. The spring has to be compressed, and then you have to get the @#$@ nut off the top, which was the hard part.

We generally tell people to use the XC90 SUV spring seats, as they are constructed much better than the S70/850 mounts. I don't know whether or not the S60 ones are the same as those or not, hopefully someone else will chime in whether or not they have used those on their S60's.
